Creating my own Subtitles

Good morning geeks, I am running XP Home SP3.
I am considering working with someone to create English subtitles for a foreign language drama. I am looking at Subtitle Workshop 2.51 which seems simple enough; key in the start and stop points of dialogue, and manually type the translation the box provided. We will be using .avi files so I see no complications there. Is there anything else that I should consider? This seems to be the most generic method that would allow playback on any player that supports .srt subs.

I see a beta version of Subtitle Workshop that jumps to version 4b, the biggest difference being that it installs where 2.51 works as a free-standing app, so why would I need anything beyond 2.51?

 

Any version of Subtitle Workshop should be fine. I, personally, have never actually gone through the process. I vaguely remember seeing another program mentioned in a forum I belong to that someone preferred over S/W. They were pretty good at correcting subtitles so I'll try to find the name of the program. But I think S/W should be fine if you are starting from scratch.

You might glance at the list of subtitle applications at Videohelp.com http://www.videohelp.com/tools/sections/subtitle Most are for editing but it might be worth the time to check out the ratings column to see if you can find a highly rated program for creating subtitles.

Looking at the list, I believe the program was Virtualsubsync http://forum.videohelp.com/threads/233206-Visualsubsync-create-your-own-subs it may be worth looking at for a few minutes to see what you think of the interface.

 

Thanks, VirtualSubSync seems like the way to go. It uses a .wav file so you can see where dialogue starts and stops.
