Critical Updates Won't Install??!!

Critical Updates Won't Install??!! I am running XP Professional - I have SP2 installed and haven't really had any problems until recently. The most recent Critical Security Updates from Microsoft won't install - they begin to download, and then they all fail! I have tried to install them several times with no success.

Recently, when I go to restart my computer, it has started telling me that it needs to run Scan Disk because of an inconsistency with something on the C drive. It comes up with a huge list of files that are "unreadable". I have let it run several times (which takes forever!) and then it takes a good half hour before the system stops sticking and runs normally once booted up. I have run every spyware tool and virus scan I have and they find nothing. I had also tried starting it in safe mode to run all the scans to make sure nothing was hiding - and that was fun - it kept freezing at a line (I think it was) AGP 440 - and then after a minute rebooting in normal mode. I finally got it to boot in safe mode, ran all the scans, and it still found nothing.

Can someone please help before I drop kick this POS into the trash?! I'm about ready to rip my hair out

 

I had 2 machines at work with 128 MB of RAM... These dont even have SP2 and once I try to dl. it it freezes the IE and I have to kill it.

My guess is that it has low memmory, however for xp 128 sohuld be enough but I dont know thats the only solution that comes to mind

 

I know XP will run on 128 MB - but it will just run - for it to run more efficiently it has to have at least 256 MB which is what I have. It's too costly to upgrade anymore because the memory in my comp is RD Ram - so it's basically antique by now. I appreciate the input though.
