crossover cables - help needed

i just bought a new computer
its all set up

but i need to get info (photos/music/docs) off the old computer
the cd/dvd drive on the old computer doesnt work so a friend sent me crossover cables - i need to know how to get my stuff off the old pc and onto the new one

anyone know?????????

Try this.

 

Depending on the connection, but these instructions work best with a Windows XP system:


Go to: Start - Control Panel - Network Connection - Setup Home Network

Write the information down as you set the network up.

Main attributes:

1. Choose the correct network adapter (if you have more than one), and also "ignore disconnected hardware" should be checked in most cases
2. Unless one of your computer has multiple network cards, and is hooked up to the internet, choose [other - This computer belongs to a network that is not connected to the internet0
3. Determine the appropriate connection for me
4. Decide your Computer Name (description is optional), write that down
5. Decide the name of your workgroup, write it down.
6. Finish the setup, and take the settings to your other computer.
7. Your other computer only needs the computer name to be unique, but the Workgroup is exactly the same.

As long as your patch cable is good, and you are on XP, that should work.

For a windows 98/ME/2000

Right click on "My Computer", goto properties. Changing the computer name and Workgroup name can be done there.
Remember to reboot after you change these things.
