Yes its very likely there are no drivers for audio for that PCs hardware, or the Admin who installed XP forgot to leave the PC in a working order, at times for Vista spec hardware the drivers that are compatible are hard to find, BUT one major question I need to ask is do you have Admin privelidges to install or test software on that PC? ifs its a work PC and the admins only have rights, then you need to raise a support call with your support team.

If you can install software on that PC then we will need some details of its hardware and make as in DELL, SONY, HP etc and model number?

Did a little looking around and while Gateway dont offer XP driver for this motherboard, its based on this one from Intel and below are all the drivers for it, do install the chipset drivers ( Chipset: Intel® Chipset Software Installation Utility ) first before audio.

and the audio used by Gateway is the Audio: Sigmatel* (IDT*) 92XX Audio one.
