OS Name Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional
    Version 5.0.2195 Service Pack 4 Build 2195
    System Manufacturer Dell Computer Corporation
    System Model Dimension XPS-T600
    System Type X86-based PC
Processor x86 Family 6 Model 7 Stepping 3 GenuineIntel ~598 Mhz (Pentium III)

    RAM 256 MB
    IE Version 6.0.2800.1106
    Cipher Strength 128-bit

My problem is very similar to the one with which j_girard started this thread. I'm trying to install DirectX 9, and an error message tells me to make sure Cryptographic Services is enabled. When I run services.msc, Cryptographic Service is not only not enabled, it's not even listed.

However, cryptsvc.dll exists in all the following folders, all within C:\WINNT --

    $NtServicePackUninstall$
    $NtUpdateRollupPackUninstall$
    ServicePackFiles\i386
    system32.

Unlike j_girard, I do NOT show that key, but I'm running 2000, not XP. Would it be the same in both?

At another board I was given a link to

    http://searchwinit.techtarget.com/tip/0,289483,sid1_gci994336,00.html

where one item of advice was

    5. Re-register the DLLs associated with cryptography. This can be done from the command line by typing:
    regsvr32 softpub.dll
    regsvr32 /u wintrust.dll
    regsvr32 /u initpki.dll
    regsvr32 /u dssenh.dll
    regsvr32 /u rsaenh.dll
    regsvr32 /u gpkcsp.dll
    regsvr32 /u sccbase.dll (not found in Windows 2000)
    regsvr32 /u slbcsp.dll
    regsvr32 /u cryptdlg.dll
    regsvr32 /u licdll.dll
    regsvr32 /u regwizc.dll
    regsvr32 /u softpub.dll

Does this seem appropriate to my situation? (I notice that the above list of dlls includes cryptdlg.dll, but not cryptsvc.dll.)

I just checked my 2K computer (same version of IE and cipher strength) and I don't have Cryptographic Service. So I think you are okay in that area.
Go to start then run and type in dxdiag and press enter (make sure you have internet access) I'm not sure if you need it but my firewall asked if the directx could access the internet.
    What version are you showing?
    Currently, I have DirectX 9.0c (4.09.0000.0904)

    I have DirectX 7.0 (4.07.00.0700).

I'm trying to install DirectX 9. Just before the installation aborts, the error message says, "A cabinet file necessary for installation cannot be trusted. Please verify the Cryptographic Services are [sic] enabled and the cabinet file certificate is valid."

So I'd really like to get this service running.

    Here's a screenshot.

I could cry. I typed up a long post with all the updates for directx 8, 8.1 and a security fix and the board would not load.
You will need to go here
    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/Browse.aspx?displaylang=en&categoryid=2 and search.
    Directx 8 was released 2/5/01 8.1 11/8/01 8.1b 6/25/02 one security patch 9/22/05
You probably have to install at least 8 and a patch before you'd be allowed to install 9. I do have a note that I wrote because I could not go from 7 to 9 on one 2K computer.

You may be right. But while I was at Microsoft's site, I got the impression that the one download would take me all the way to 9, and the size of the download would depend on what I already had (as I recall, it was around 30 MB). At any rate, before the install wizard aborts, one of its screens says "Installing Components: DirectX 9 for Windows 2000." So the downloading appears to be done; the problem is with running the downloaded installer.

The obstacle I am dealing with is, Cryptographic Service is not set up on this machine, so I can't check the certificate on a cab file (which I presume is part of the download, though the error message is silent on this point), so the DirectX 9 install wizard keeps aborting.

Please don't think I am ungrateful for your thoughts on downloading from Microsoft, but the question before the house is this:

My original post quoted a bit of advice I received from another source, to the effect that registering a list of files (that should already be on my HDD) may enable Cryptographic Service to run. Does anyone agree or disagree?

If no one cares to address that question, that's OK -- I'll back up my registry and try registering those files anyway. But it would be nice if someone would say whether they like the idea or not.

Fact: I do not have Crytographic Service on my 2K computers (I've checked three of them).
Fact: I was not able to update my directx from version 7 to version 9.
I got an error message. I do not have the error written down so I can't tell if it was the same as what you are getting.
Fact: I was able to install directx 9 on one computer that gave the error.
My notes indicated that I had to install version 8.
Fact: My three computers, running 2K, that go on the internet and are updated/patched all have the latest version of directx 9.0c with a patch from June 2008.dxdiag

    Now I found this:
Again, I do not have Cryptographic Services listed under Services (Admin Tools in Control Panel) on any of three computers running windows 2000. So, I can't agree nor disagree with what you propose to do.

I just checked and black viper also doesn't list it
    http://www.blackviper.com/WIN2K/servicecfg.htm
so maybe it is under a different name?
