Okay... I hope someone can explain this to me!

While installing a new game, I was told I needed to update DirectX. When I tried to do this, I received the dreaded "Windows XP Logo testing failed!" message. I did a TON of research on how to alleviate this problem and, to make a long story short, I discovered that "Cryptographic Services" is simply NON-EXISTENT on my system! I need help!!! Here are my system spec's...

    HP Pavilion 513n
    1.8 Gb HD
    512 Mb DDR RAM
Windows XP Home SP 1 (the problem above won't let me update to SP 2!)

I've located the cryptsvc.dll registry file, but there's no sign of the actual Cryptographic Services service. Please help!

    Thanks!

Do you show this in the registry?

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\CryptSvc

Then the cryptographic service is not missing ;)

Is there a start and type tag on the right?

That's the thing... it shows up in the HKEY registry, but it doesn't show up in Control Panel/Administrative Tools/Services... I just saw on a tech site that it has to be turned on/off in Safe Mode... could this be what I'm doing wrong?

    Description
    DisplayName
    ErrorControl
    ImagePath
    ObjectName
    Start

    Ok, there is your problem.

    Right click, new> DWORD value.

    Name it Type
    Set the value to 32

Reboot and check for the service.
