Alright, I did search through the forums but had no luck. I even tried the suggestions on this thread http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=65406&highlight=photoshop+start but it didn't help.

Yesterday I was using Adobe Photoshop CS and it worked just fine. I left for a while and then tried to boot it up again but it would freeze at the little loading screen (loading this ... done, preaching something or other... done). I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling twice, and I've also checked my harddrive for errors. Does anyone have any advice? Thanks in advance.

    What OS you using?

At what point in the startup does it freeze, by that I mean whats it loading/reading at the time ( Photoshop in its splash screen has a readout of what its reading at the bottom )?

This could well be a corrupt preference file, which does account for many of PS's errors and freezes.

Note that in Windows XP, you must have hidden files visible to find the Prefs file. Here's how to do that:

Choose Tools > Folder Options and then click the View tab.
Select "Show hidden files and folders" in the "Hidden files and folders" section, and then click OK.

The Pref file is located here in XP/w2k C:\Documents and Settings\yourusername\Application Data\Adobe\Photoshop\8.0\Adobe Photoshop CS Settings and called Adobe Photoshop CS Prefs.psp delete this file and reboot PS should replace the file at boot, you will have to reset any preferences you set plus a possibility you need to eneter your licence key and activate the software again.

or you can delete all the pref files by starting Photoshop and immediatly press and keep held down CTRL-ALT-SHIFT until a dialogue box comes up asking if you want to delete the preference files click OK ( again you will have to set any custom prefs, re-activate and install any custom brushes etc again )

    I'm using Windows XP Home.

I tried both of your suggestions (deleting Adobe Photoshop CS Prefs.psp and also trying the ctrl+alt+shift thingy) but neither seems to do the trick. Adobe stops responding right when it gets to "Reading text global resources...done"

Oh I guess I could mention that if I bring up the task manager at this time my cpu reads a steady 100% usage until I force quit Adobe. I don't know if that helps any...

Did you delete the file: "New Doc Sizes.psp" from this folder:

    "C:\Documents and Settings\%USER%\Application Data\Adobe\Photoshop\8.0\Adobe Photoshop CS Settings"

    Then try starting up Photoshop.

    Matacumbie,

I did what you suggested (deleted the New Doc Sizes.psp file) and now CS loads up. I can create new files now but for some reason it won't let me open up my old ones (old as in maybe 2-3 days old). It brings up a little notice that says "Could not complete your request because the file is not compatible with this version of Photoshop." Any ideas? Thanks ^^

I also just tried opening the file in ImageReady but it comes up with the error "Could not complete this operation. An assertation has failed."

Go to start > run and type regedit look and see if you have the entry

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Adobe\Save For Web 3.0

Going to be off a minute, but will be back.

Looked for HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Adobe\Save For Web 3.0

The only folders I found in the \Adobe folder were

    Acrobat Reader
    Adobe Gamma
    ALM
    Common Files
    Filter Gallery
    Image Ready 8.0
    Photoshop
    Photoshop Album
    Registration

OK, Sorry about that, had to get rid of some company. :)

First. The only thing I can locate on the first error message Could not complete your request because the file is not compatible with this version of Photoshop is pertaining to Symantec Norton AntiVirus 9.0 installed on a Mac, which doesn't apply to you.

    http://www.adobe.com/support/techdocs/331092.html

Second. A possible solution for the second error message, Could not complete this operation. An assertation has failed. in ImageReady was to delete that registry key I gave you. BUT. Several versions of Photoshop are mentioned but cannot verify it works for CS or even present in CS.

I don't want to suggest you do something that might cause more problems and force another reinstall. For now, make sure you do not have that key, HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Adobe\Save For Web 3.0 in your registry.

Go to Start > Run and type regedi. You will see several entries on the left, start by clicking the + sign next to HKEY_CURRENT_USER and keep expanding them, Software, Adobe, etc.

Or, is that what you did?

Yeah, I had seen that post for Mac users on the support forums for Adobe.

As for the "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Adobe\Save For Web 3.0", I did look for it in the registry and found nothing. That list I gave earlier were all the folders in my registry under HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Adobe\

I hope I didn't force you to get rid of your company >.> I'd feel bad...

Are recent files ( 2-3 days ) the only ones your having trouble with?

The last time I opened these files was yesterday around noon. They were originally created about 5 days ago.

One thing I did notice I might add; when trying to open the files in Photoshop (file -> open -> *browse and highlight file*) if I highlight the name of the file, it does not show a preview of the picture whereas if it were a .jpg or .gif it does. Also, in ImageReady if I do the same thing, a preview does come up of the picture just the way I left it... and then if I click "ok" to the ImageReady error, it will open up the file but layers which were full of color or whatnot are empty or not all there.

I don't know if that's worth anything but I thought I'd throw that out. =p

Man, I am at a loss here.

It's windows, a restart couldn't hurt. I will keep checking, although sounds like you are coming up with as much as me.

I've tried restarting a couple of times already, but I guess another wouldn't hurt. Thanks for all your help anyway -- I'll keep my eye on this thread and one I posted on the Adobe Forums as well if you come up with anything. Thanks again ^^

Please do. You will get other possible solutions or things to try. Alot of members here are very experienced with Photoshop and might have had a similar problem.
