Curious Why No "FastestFox" Download Available Here?

I really don't know much (obviously) about much of this, but I have installed/am using Firefox 4 (on an XP machine and a Vista system) as of yesterday, and as probably too often, looking at add-on's to, well, add-on (!), and usually attempt at least a minimum of "research" on these things before just adding them willy-nilly, and I see FasterFox http://www.majorgeeks.com/Fasterfox_d4801.html, and FasterFox "Lite" http://www.majorgeeks.com/Fasterfox_Lite_d6838.html (the latter being actually a few KB "larger" than the former?) however no "FastestFox" http://smarterfox.com/news/.

In any event, I am sure there is a simple explanation for this.

    Thanks in advance,
    g

    Hi Glenn,

Have read on Mozillazine forum that these addons that claim to speed up Fx are not doing so at all and some have been shown as slowing down Fx, NOT speeding up! Some of the ones that are the slowest on startup and possibly slowing down Fx here: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/performance/#addon-11 Keep in mind that this list can/will be updated weekly as more addons will be tested.

Also Mozilla is requesting the co-operation of the addons authors in order for them to tweak their addons for faster startup and browsing experience for us users. Here is some info on that: http://blog.mozilla.com/addons/2011/04/01/improving-add-on-performance/

Glenn, I just checked out Fastest Fox addon and it's #11 in the list at 29%. So it does slow down your Fx at startup and perhaps also in browsing. In order to see more than the 1st 10 you've got to click on that see more or whatever.

    Here's the pic.

Caliban I don't need no steenkin' title!

    Greetings, grc123.

I'm with oma (Hey, oma!) on this one. I've got to believe that the folks at Mozilla are doing their own tweaking - you're probably going to be hard pressed to find anything better than what's incorporated in their own nightly builds.

Can't count how many times I've had to clean out add-ons/extensions from Firefox and other browsers because of problems they've introduced.

Hey Caliban! :wave To add: I'm sure that once the addon authors have complied and fixed their addons, Mozilla will review them again. That's why the list may change every week and more will be added. As far as I understand the users will get a warning about the slow addons in the future. Am not sure if that will be prior to downloading them? We'll see.

Most of the addons that Glenn mentioned above could be old ones and should not be used in conjunction with Firefox 4 and above, not even the newest one(s). It's always up to the user to determine whether they slow down in startup and/or browsing. I've got abt 12 addons and notice a slight speed loss compared with being in safemode. And that's without having the worst addons mentioned in that list.

Thanks again oma and hey I am very curious on THIS: Firefox 4 does not seem to have the same "Safe Mode" (plain, basic, vanilla, independent of any add-on's) that FF 3 did? Or at least I haven't found it yet, but it doesn't seem to be positioned/located as it was before, as one of the two start/launch modes.

    Any ideas on that, please?

    Always,
    g...

    Hi G.
    To get into Safe Mode:

    1. Press the ALT button. (right of Windows logo) That brings up the Menu Bar temporarily. Click on Help.
    2. Click on Restart with Add-ons Disabled.
    3. Click OK
    4. Restart
    5. Do NOT check any boxes in the box that will show up next. Click on Continue in Safe Mode.
    6. Voila, you're in Safe Mode.

If you have already the Menu Bar showing, then you just click on HELP and take it from there.
