curser out of control!

Yikes 1.2 amd athlon, 6 1/2 yr old computer now has a mouse problem. It is a new (couple months old) logitec optical mouse replaced because I was having problems with it freezing and having to shut down several times a day. That problem dissappeared with the new mouse. Yesterday the mouse jumped over to the middle right side of the desktop and wants to stay there! jumps right back when I try to do anything! I have to move it quickly and in circles to get to a button and try to coodinate my click on a button to open anything. It is just about impossible to do anything it took several trys to get here. This is a very weird problem, my speakers just died, is it just another indicator that this system is retirement age? Do you guys recomend systems?
I was hoping this would go a few more months.

Is it a wireless mouse ? If so, try changing the batteries.

If not, try using a piece of white paper for a mouse mat.

 

No it is not wireless, and I am using a white paper under the mouse? What about reseting it to a couple days ago? I don't remember how to do that.

Go to Start, programs, accessories, system tools, then system restore.

 

Is it PS2 or USB ?
I got an old computer once which kept having mouse problems. In the end I realized that the plug (PS2 type) wasn't going into the socket far enough. Seeing as it was an old computer (and old mouse) I trimmed the outer plastic on the plug, which allowed it to go further into the socket. It was fine after that.

When I tried to reset it it stopped 1/3 of the way across the time bar. Closed down the computer after 20 minutes and when it came back on it said it was unable to set it back to Mondays date. (The only one high lighted this month) ?
I guess it won't hurt to try again.

Are you by chance low on HD space?

 

25 of 56 used 30 free. It seems to be worse on the desktop.
