    Hi there!

Im working on a laptop for my friend. She wanted me to format it and install W7, so I did. It`s an Acer Aspire 5520. It came with Vista, and now I installed W7 on it.

The installation finishes and reboots. After that, nothing happens. I went to BIOS to check boot priority, and HDD is first. When I turn it on, there is just a black screen with a underscore blinking in the top left corner. After several attempts, I reinstalled W7, but that didnt help. I tried making a Vista-CD but now the CD/DVD drive is not showing in BIOS, so only option i have is to boot from HDD which isnt working. When I start the computer, the CD/DVD start spinning, but its not booting or going to installation.

Any idea what I can do? I have used the same discs to installe W7 on 3 other computers this week, so I know that they are working..

The fix for the underscore cursor would usually be an MBR repair which in Win7 would be the bootrec /fixmbr command at the command prompt.

But you can't boot to the Win7 DVD. Perhaps you could use the Microsoft USB Tool to put your Win7 installation DVD onto an empty USB flash drive and boot from that. Then select Repair your Computer rather than installation and get to the command prompt and run the fix mbr command.

Edit: I see that that tool wants an ISO image of the installation disc. So you would need to create an ISO from your DVD first. Something like Imgburn would have the ability to "Create Image File from Disc" which would take your DVD and create an ISO file on your HD which you could then put on USB using the Microsoft tool.

I got it figured out now. Looks like this computer doesnt want to run Win7 at all, so I installed Vista(do`h), and then everything went smooth.. At the Acer support site I can see that there is no drivers for Win7, so I guess that was the problem.. Made a Vista installer on my USB with UltraISO, and reinstalled. Took a good 5 minutes before the underscore disappeared nad went into installation, but finally it worked!

    Thanks for your reply =)
