Cyberlink Powercinema

My Mom's computer has had this "Cyberlink Powercinema" program that comes up at startup pretty much since she got the computer.

It shows up as a big, black box on the desktop with a "home" button and a left-pointing arrow at it's top left, but that's all. Nothing is clickable, I can't make it go away with the task manager.

I've done some internet searching, but have found no problem similar to this one with this program (though I've found several others).

I've gone through a bunch of steps, searching for the program in processes, etc., and have deleted the program from "program files," but it still shows up at startup. It doesn't show up in add/remove programs, nor does it show up in the task manager......

I'm trying to remove it, and frankly I almost never have a problem of this sort that I can't figure out for myself, but this one's got me baffled. Can you please help me figure out how to get rid of this annoying program?

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

The correct way to remove it is to uninstall the program associated with it which will remove the registry entries responsible for loading it at startup. Deleting the files has made a proper uninstall impossible. Also uninstalling this may break the ability to use various features and hardware that are part of the PC (like possibly a video tuner). See: http://www.cyberlink.com/products/powercinema/overview_en_US.html

This is not a malware program or problem and as such I'm moving this to the Software Forum.

Well, I knew it wasn't malware, I just didn't know where else to put it.

And hey, frankly it's ACTING like malware. ;)

I know about the deleting thing, but:

    1. it's not showing up in add/remove
    2. I've searched everywhere and there's no uninstall or unwise.exe
    3. it won't open so I can adjust its preferences to not come on at startup
    4. I can't find ANY program that it's a part of or related to (there are other Cyberlink programs on the computer, but they're power management software and things like that) that I could adjust the preferences of or uninstall
    5. while deleting isn't the correct way of "removing," it should still prevent it from starting? Because it's... gone?
    6. I DID find it in msconfig and disable it with a selective startup, and it still shows up anyway
    7. There's more, but frankly I've tried so many things to either get rid of this thing or at least get it to stop running that I can't remember them all.
    8. it's not even in the task manager (in processes, applications, or services)

edit: uhh.. I just read the REST of your post.
"Deletion" was my last resort effort. This program has been on the computer, and acting like this, since she got it. To my knowledge, it has always been a useless black box on the desktop (that's the first way I ever saw it, and she's not savvy enough to have really even messed with it to try and remove it herself... I do that stuff for her).

You should be able to find it and disable it with Autoruns.

Depending on the make of the computer (example, if it's an HP), Powercinema could be a part of the HP MediaSmart or TouchSmart programs, or of their Cyberlink PowerDVD Suite. Any one of those set of programs uses powercinema to catalogue it's media library, and it's a process that runs in the background whenever you start the computer.

Well, that's really the whole "problem":

It's not running in the background, it's showing as a big black box on the desktop. It also doesn't seem to really be "running" very well, since it can't be clicked on or "operated" in any way. The only way this black box can be affected is to click on it and drag it around.

    DVDLauncher
Cyberlink PowerCinema video viewing software which allows you to play VDs upon insertion.

Search for dvdlauncher.exe; this might be what is loading at startup and creating the black box.

If that fails, download Startup Control Panel
    http://majorgeeks.com/Startup_Control_Panel_Standalone_Version_d4359.html
go through and uncheck/untick anything related to dvdlauncher or powercinema.

I have been looking for a way to remove this annoyance myself. Though, I have not found a successful solution to remove it, you can go into Task Manager, click on the Processes Tab and look for MyRss.exe (*32)for 64bit machines). End this process and that pesky little box will go away. You will have to do this each time you reboot, but it does get rid of it for the duration of your login.

I have a HP TouchSmart. This issue just started after a number of automatic updates were loaded. I've been able to get rid of the box by going to the TouchSmart screen and then back to the home screen. The black box is then gone until I logoff as the user or reboot the system. It is not an issue for other users (family members) on the computer. I've gone through and deleted all the Cyberlink software that was loaded on
and have run CCleaner. The black box comes back each time. Waiting to hear back from HP.

I had the same black box on one of my client's computers. I finally went to cyberlink and installed the 30-day trial of powercinema, rebooted, then uninstalled and rebooted again. The black box was gone.
