My D-drive, Sony CD-RW & E-drive, Philips DVD+RW will not work. I get a message that says " D or E is not accessible-Incorrect Function ". I have had them for at least 3 years with no problems. I had a bad malware problem a couple of weeks ago & got it all cleaned up. Was wondering if that could have caused this problem. I checked Device Manager Hardware & it says they are working properly. I ran troubleshoot with no results. I also checked AutoRun with no results. I ran microsofts Auto Fix-It, with no results. I don't use them very often so I dont know when they stopped working.
    Will appreciate all help.
    Jack.

Hi Plodr, I tried the first fix & the Reg# is not the same as the one you showed. The no. on mine is HKEY_CURRENT_CONFIG\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E96A-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}. The right hand side says abDefault.....REG_SZ...Value not set.
The second fix I tried. I cannot see how to download these reg. files. http://cid-ab9de24be9af1b9f.skydrive...RegHacks/Fixes. I click on RegHacks/ Fixes & there is no way to download the files.
    Thanks, Jack.

The first and second fix are the same. If you do not have the upper and lower filters in your registry, then that fix is not going to work on your problem.
At this point, I don't know what to suggest. I had to clean a Sony rootkit off of an XP computer a few years ago. After I cleaned it, I was never able to get the burner to work. I even tried an external, connected by USB, and that didn't work. I never solved the problem, which sounds similar to what you are facing.

    Try this
Right-Click on the drive w/ the problem then Properties then the Recording Tab
and then check the "Enable CD Recording On This Drive" box.

It does not have "enable CD recording" in the tabs, It has General, Properties, DVD Region, Volums, Driver & Details.
    Thanks for your time.

I took my pc apart, cleaned it & disconnected D & E drives on both ends, then reconnected them. I now have my DVD back & I can live with that.
Thanks plodr for your help & time.

Glad you have one drive that works. At least you can install things from a CD if needed.

If you want to spend a little money, you can get an external enclosure and hook the CD drive up by a USB port and use it to burn CDs. (I have two external enclosures and a burner in each).

    Example of what I mean.

it has to hold a 5.25" drive, the size of opticals, and has to have an IDE rather than a SATA connector.
