    hi all,
i seem to have a problem where my D: drive is just gone. my dvd drive has been broken for a long while so i took a friends philips (cdrw 1200 series) out of one of his pc's and installed it in mine. so i plug it in and windows(xp) installs it but i get a little message on my found new hardware wizard that sais there was a problem and it might not work right so i reinstall several times and i always get the same message, and then i notice the D: drive in my computer is completly gone, and when i put a cd in and go to run and type D: i get a msg that sais D: refers to a location that is unavailable. so then i find the driver for it http://www.p4c.philips.com/cgi-bin/...8&slg=AEN&mid=Link_Software&hlt=Link_Software
but the flashtool cant find the hardware and there doesnt seem to be anyother way to get the driver to install without the flashtool.

so basically D: drive is just gone :(

sorry for the grammer its a little early.
thanks for any help u can offer.

Is the jumper on the drive set correctly, if on the cable on its own is it set to master and if its shareing one cable are the drives master and slave?

If you enter the Bios is the drive recognised?

As Halo says have you set the RW to 'Master' if you feel comfortable taking out the RW look at the rear and you will see a small (usually) Black jumper that connects from North to South. On the top of the RW you will see a guide saying CS_SL_MA put the jumper on MA and connect your ribbon cable so as the RW is at the END connection of the cable then boot up and see if XP recognises and installs driver.

i cant find any cable thats small enough to fit where it sais CSM the only cables i can see that fit to the cdrw are the analog audio cable, ide, and power cables

when i took out the old dvd rom i just memorized the cables and hooked the cdrw up the same way the dvd was hooked up.
agh i dunno what to do :(

ok i found out what u guys meant i set the jumper to master and nothing has changed except now it reads as secondary master.i then went to device manager and uninstalled it and scanned for hardware changes so it reinstalled. still same problems :(

in device manager it shows an ! mark beside the cdrw, dunno if that info is useful at all but thought id throw it in.

You could try this to resolve this issue , Open up device manager. Look under CD/DVD drives and find the model numbers. Search on Google for the "firmware" you need for that model number.
Download the firmware and update as neccessary. I have found this info in another post , so it is always best to use 'Search' facility first before you post .. Thanks to Prophets21 for this

Go into Control panel/admin tools/computer management/storage/removable storage/libraries then if you see your RW there right click and choose properties/general and see if the enable box is checked..

    libraries folder is completly empty.

when i go into its properties from viewing it in device manager i have it enabled.
under device status it sais this "Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)

Click Troubleshoot to start the troubleshooter for this device."

    Location : Location 0 (0)
    manufacturer: (Standard CD-ROM drives)
    Device type: DVD/CD-ROM drives

    not in that order.

when i posted about the driver in the first post i was talking about the firmware, if there is an actual driver i cant find it anywhere, its not even on philips site.

    1. Are you sure you've connected the IDE cable properly? Red stripe to pin No.1. Also check the other end of the cable for proper connection to the M/B.
    2. Do you have another device on the Secondary IDE cable? If so, make sure its jumper is set for Slave.
    3. In the BIOS, make sure that the master device for the Secondary IDE channel is set to Auto or Cdrom.
    4. You do not need to provide a driver for an optical device, Windows provides and installs its own driver.
    5. Have you attempted to update the firmware for the drive? It is possible that the update has misfired and corrupted the drives cmos.
    6. If none of the above fix your problem, reinstall the IDE controller driver for your M/B

    Regards, Blueheeler.

Go to Device Manager and click on IDE Controllers.
You should have three devices here: Primary, Secondary, and Dual Channel.
To install the IDE controller driver that is included with Windows XP, follow these steps:
Right-click the IDE controller driver that you want to reinstall, and then click Update Driver.

Alternatively, you could check to see if your Motherboard/Chipset manufacturer has installable IDE Controller drivers. The drivers should be available for download on the manufacturer's website.

reinstalling the IDE controller driver didnt seem to help it.
ill try to find IDE Controller drivers for nforce2 and if that doesnt help i guess ill just take it to a pc repair shop.
anyways thanks to u all for taking the time to help :)
