I am operating with XP Pro. I have a HPXE783.

    Two parts to this question:

    1) In My Computer I keep noticing that on occasion there is a Device Driver (D : ) that appears. I don't know what this is and when it is there my CD ROM (M : ) does not work propperly. If it is there, then I can go to the tray (by my clock) and click on Safely Remove Hardware and turn off (D : ). But I don't know where it is even coming from. How do I figure this out and get rid of it if need be? In the Device Manager I see there is a Quantum Fireball under drivers, is this it and again how do I get rid of it? I tried to unistall but it just is there again after restart. The only thing I have connected to my computer is my printer/scanner/fax combo and I see that listed under drivers too.

    2) Speaking of the tray having the Safely Remove Hardware option, it is not always in the tray. If it's not there, I have no idea where to find it. Where else can I go to do this same thing? I was stuck earlier when I needed to disable (D : ) and that option was not in the tray.

    1) Its to with you putting your CD-Rom drive as M:. Maybe try uninstalling your Cd-rom drive and let it put itself as the default drive letter.

    2) Right click on the D: when its there and there should be an option to safely remove it.

    1) I didn't assign it the M : . It has always been like that.

How do I uninstall and reinstall the drive? I'm still learning a lot of this stuff.

    2) I tried that, no unistall option there.

Start Menu -> Control Panel -> System -> Hardware Tab -> Device Manager -> DVD/CD-ROM Devices -> Right Click your CD-ROM Drive -> Uninstall

Restart and Windows XP should have some sort of drivers to install it then goto the website of the company that made it and download the right drivers or use the CD that came with it.

Tried the uninstall. Once I restarted both M and D were still there.

Well then i'm stumped. Try taking a look in your BIOS.

Is it one of those combo DVD / CD-RW drives?

My old one came up as 2 drives - Drive F: for the DVD, and drive G: for the CD-RW. My new one doesn't do it though...

Have you ever, even once, connected a USB drive to your system?

You might also try start>run>devmgmt.msc>view>show hidden devices> and looking to see if any devices pop up that are out of place, hidden devices are translucent
