I've been having trouble with this for several days.

I download the software (drivers and such) that came with the wireless adapter, but then it keeps telling me that it can't find the device.

I plug it in when it tells me to, and usually the orange lights on the adapter light up - but it doesn't do so anymore.

I usually get a pop-up from the notifications tray that tells me that the adapter didn't install successfully.

    Can someone please help me?

can you try using it in another computer? or try another usb port?

It works on my other computer now.

Still doesn't work on my main computer, though - no matter which USB port it's plugged into.

    Hi

What Windows version and service pack are you using?

Have you had to remove malware reciently or had a malware infection?

In device manager do you have any devices with yellow ! marks by them, if so what?

What are your security applications installed, please name all?

    I'm using Windows 7 64-bit.

I've had a run-in with some malware before, but I removed it.

In device manager, under "Other Devices", "Universal Serial Bus (USB) Controller" is marked with a yellow exclamation sign.

I had Norton before, but I uninstalled everything on my computer because of the bloatware.

I know bumping is frowned upon but I'm running out of time and have an essay due real soon.

Does anyone know how to fix this?

seems as tho any usb device will not work. You need to install your chipset driver which includes usb drivers. What make/model computer do you have?

My flash drive works fine and everything.

And I'm using a CyberPower PC.

Some guy asked me to look for it on a site called pcidatabase.com

This is what I found when I put in it's code.

    How is the motherboard involved?

I'm assuming that you have a pci usb expansion card? Do you have usb ports on your motherboard? Are they working properly?

did some digging, and found this page.

seems that the info you provided is for the device manufacturer, but there is probably another brand name that the card was sold by, and they provided drivers for your device. Also, USB support, as stated in the quote above, is provided by windows. Are you using the latest service pack(s) for xp?

sorry bout that, was trying to handle 2 threads at once (guess i can't multitask as good anymore ;) )

I'm still a bit confused, tho, so maybe you can clarify this a little better.

You're usb ports that this adapter will not work properly on, are they on an expansion card, in a pci slot? or are they on the motherboard?

Repeating a little here, can you verify that other devices can work properly in the any usb port?

back to the windows 7 thing, it's been my experience that microsoft has been pretty good about providing access to drivers for all kinds of devices, and if it hasn't been able to find one for you, you might be out of luck. do you have it set up to check windows update for drivers for your hardware?

My other USB devices work fine.

Only this D-Link adapter is giving me a problem.

It used to work, but then one day it just stopped working.

Oh, and how do I find out whether it's on the motherboard or not?

the usb slots will be at or near where these ones are (right under the keyboard/mouse ports):
    http://www.yourdictionary.com/images/computer/_PCPORTS.JPG

or, if they are located in a slot lower down, like this:

it's possible you have pci usb card.

that's why I asked what motherboard it is, because that will let us find the proper usb drivers, to make sure that's not the culprit.

one more question, if you remove the adapter, does the Universal Serial Bus (USB) Controller, marked with a yellow exclamation sign go away?

also you say you've tried the drivers that came with the device. Have you tried downloading more up-to-date drivers from dlink's website?
