K, ive been trying to burn a music cd for a few hours now, wondering why its not working, and it finally hit me, i have a CD drive that can only write dvd-r and dvd-rw...

Is there any way to tinker with the drive or files in order for me to make a music cd?

If not, about how much could it cost to make it so that my laptop can write cd's and dvd's?

    Thanks,
    George

I know of no optical drives that can burn DVDs and not CDs. Must be something else.

Well, what else could it be, ive tried three different programs, (dell media direct, windows media player, windows cd writer), and two different brands of disks (cd-r, cd-rw).

I keep getting the unknown error windows media player message, and dell media direct keeps stopping and saying there was an error while writing.

Not knowing the details of your machine, it could be as simple as trying to write too fast to media not rated for that write speed, or perhaps some other process running on your PC is using system resources to a point the burning operation is interrupted. (In the old days, you dared not do anything on your machine while burning a CD lest you get the dreaded buffer underrun error.) Or it could be something else altogether. A few more details about processor and memory of your machine might be of assistance.

    its a dell inspiron e1505.

    1.83 dual core processor
    1 gig of ram
"8X CD/DVD Burner (DVD+/-RW) with double-layer DVD+R write capability" (right from the dell site)

I just tried writing a movie to a blank disc, and it worked fine.

Wait, i found something, this is the drive shown in my order list from dell: "313-3959: 8X DVD+/-RW Drive for Inspiron 6400/E1505"

Could they have given me the wrong drive? or is that the same one as the one listed above?

  6. TheDoug

Doubtful. As I said before, I'm not aware of any drive that burns DVD and not CD as well.

well, i chatted with a dell tech rep. we still couldnt get it to write a music cd, and they cant send me a new optical drive, cause the one now isnt "completely failed"... yeah, it only does 2/3 of what it should, so it only is "1/3 failed"

Hell, they give me a drive that cant write music, and they dont send me one that does? I think im gonna have to chat with a supervisor....

Maybe try Nero to burn your CD. It may fail too, but is has an option to save the burning log. Thus making it easier to determine what's going wrong.

I got the most recent updates with the dell technician, still cant write music.

ill give nero a try, and see if it can pinpoint the problem. If not, im getting on the phone with dell again, my left speaker is starting to shut off at random times again, and now this problem too...

  11. GStam66

    GStam66 Private First Class

alright i tried nero, and for some reason it said that the burn was a success. I know it wasnt cause it only took a minute, and i didnt hear the signature whirring sound.

When i popped the disk in, i got an error message saying "Access to E:/ is denied". And the disc was blank. W...T...F...?

Does this help pinpoint the problem at all? Im guessing its the drive itself?

  12. erikske

    erikske Sergeant

Probably a bad contact. There's no need to replace anything, just turn the stereo jack a little until the speaker works.

  13. erikske

    erikske Sergeant

Make sure 'Write' is checked in the Burn dialog, else Nero will only simulate a burn.
For audio CD's ALWAYS use disc-at-once and check 'Finalize CD'

its a laptop, so im gonna have a hard time getting to the wiring for the speaker.

    That would get me angry!
Try nero once more. Create an audio CD (no multisession) and put some audio on it. Now burn the compilation whilst making sure burning mode is set to 'disc-at-once' and that 'write' and 'finalize cd' are checked. When it finishes, with or without errors, click the 'save log' button to save the burning log and post it here.

while im installing nero again, im curious, whats a better optical drive? Sony or NEC? The new one is a NEC, the one i got "stock" was the sony one. If I wind up fixing the problem, and its not the drive, which one should i keep?

  21. erikske

    erikske Sergeant

    I'd choose NEC.

  22. GStam66

    GStam66 Private First Class

    Heres exactly what happened:

    Install Nero
    Pop in blank CD
Get "Access to E:/ is denied" error message
    Open Nero
Create an audio CD, burn at once, no simulation
Asks me to save an image file, save one.
Starts "writing" CD, no error messages, but i know the cd isnt being written (not spinning!)
"Burn process completed successfully" (my ass!)

No error messages, no nothing. It says its burning, but its not.

    The log was:

    Burning process started
    Burning process completed successfully.

    erikske Sergeant

I think i see what went wrong. Since nero asks to save an image you've probably selected the image recorder as the burning device (which means there is a huge image file somewhere on your HD). You should select your cd recorder from the drop down menu at the top of the window, before pressing burn.

EDIT: the log you see in the burning window is the ultra-short version of the one that get's saved when you press 'save log', that's why you need to save it.

when i choose to select the recorder, there is only one option, Device name: Image Recorder. No drop down menu.

Theres the "burn image" option, and then theres the "write CD option" I did the write CD option first, to create an image, then did the burn image.

Im supposed to save an image file first, then choose "burn Image", right? Cause when i do, it asks me to save another image. I re-saved it under a different name and i got a different log attached:

    Nero can detect your drive:
    Code:
    CD-ROM: <_NEC DVD+-RW ND-6650A>Version: 102C - HA 1 TA 0 - 5.5.10.5
     Adapter driver: <atapi> HA 1
Bus Type : default (0) -> ATAPI, detected: ATAPI
But somehow it is unable to use it, since you can't select it from the drop down menu.
Can you see if it is listed in the Recorder->Choose Recorder window? (Restart nero first and if it gives an error, report it)

  26. GStam66

    GStam66 Private First Class

There is only one option for the list of recorders:

    Device: Image Recorder
    SCSI ID: -
    Adapter: Virtual Device
    Adapter Number: -

And the error message is the red triangle (i think, i know its red) one. I dont have the option of reporting it. It only comes up when i first enter the disc into the tray, and choose Nero to compile a CD.

What version of Nero are you using? I have ran across this issue on a desktop before when I had used Nero SmartStart and selected Image Recorder. The application wouldn't burn a CD because I had selected the DVD image recorder option.:)

Try to disable or uninstall all other burning programs you might have. If one of those programs has a service running that locks the drive, nero can of course not access it.
Alternately, try starting nero with NO CD in the drive and then see if the drive is listed.

  31. GStam66

    GStam66 Private First Class

    i am using nero 5.

The most recent tech said he was sending me the disk for sonic recorder (the burning program that comes with the laptop.) He said to uninstall nero, and sonic, then reinstall sonic.

If sonic was locking the drive, even windows or windows media player couldnt access the drive?

I just tried starting nero with no disk, same selection (just the one "image recorder").

    Very difficult one to resolve...
Try looking in your event viewer for any cdrom related errors. If you just ran nero and you got the 'Access is denied' error, they should be at the top of either the System or Application section. Note: you may have to open the error's properties in order to view if it's cdrom or nero related. The event viewer can be accessed by typing eventvwr.msc in the start->run dialog.

There could be invalid or missing filter drivers on your system.
Download busTRACE Filter Driver Load Order and verify all the filter drivers listed are still present on the system. Do this by checking that the file name displayed next to 'File Location' exists.
You can also try this registry patch, which may also fix the issue. Be sure to backup the registry first, should anything go wrong. Follow the instructions in the Readme provided.

If still no luck, how is the drive connected? Via USB or IDE (= internal)

So basically, i was supposed to go to my drivers folder and make sure the ones listed here were in there? Cause they were all there.

And the drive is indeed internal.

EDIT: and for the registry patch, do i use the CDGONE one or the EDITREG one? It says only use the EDITREG one if i want to, but i dont know if its what i want? lol

If GEARAspiWDM is responsible, try removing it with this tool. Note that this may cause iTunes to lose cd recording abilities.

K, its backed up. So, do i use CDGONE or EDITREG?

Well, i tried that CDGONE program, and i still cant burn an audio cd. Should i restore the registry to the way it was before? or is leaving it like it is ok?

If it doesn't have any effect, restoring the registry may be best.
The only way to know if GEARAspiWDM is responsible, is to uninstall it using the Automatic Removal app on this page and reboot. Chances are good this will resolve the issue. If not, other candidates are those Sonic drivers and the one from Oak technologies.

uh oh, cant restore it: "Not all data was successfully written to the registry. Some keys are open by the system or other processes."

Wait, im supposed to uninstall the drivers one by one till i can burn an audio CD? Arent i supposed to reinstall the ones that were ok?

  47. erikske

    erikske Sergeant

One of them is probably failing. The question is which one...
Wait with reinstalling drivers until the problem is fixed, just in case more than one is failing. I would try AFS2K next, since it means 'Audio File System' i think it is a good candidate. It gets installed with a lot of HP products. Problem is that it won't uninstall that easily. Might have to do some googling on that. I'm going to get some sleep now, but i'll check back tomorrow.

  48. GStam66

    GStam66 Private First Class

ok, i googled that driver and the general consensus was not to delete it by itself (causes a bunch of problems), but to get rid of it by uninstalling the software it came with (In this case id assume Sonic Recorder).

The last dell tech wanted me to uninstall Sonic, but because i dont have a disc for it, to wait till he sent me one. So odds are, im not gonna be able to try this for a day or two, or until i find a way to safely get rid of that driver from Oak Tech.

  49. erikske

    erikske Sergeant

You can disable AFS2K without uninstalling it by modifying a registry value. Open regedit and navigate to HKLM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}.
Backup this key, should anything go wrong.
Double click on the 'LowerFilters' value. If AFS2K is listed here, remove it. If it is the only value, replace it with cdrom. Confirm with OK and repeat for the 'UpperFilters' value.
    Reboot the computer.

Note: you can completely delete the 'LowerFilters' and 'UpperFilters' values, effectively disabling all filter drivers. If a filter driver is causing all this, this WILL fix it. If you choose to do this, you have to reinstall nero and/or sonic (i recommend you install only nero at first).

    Try burning the CD again.
If you encounter any problems after modifying the key, simply restore it using your backup and reboot.

well, the disk finally came in the mail, so i uninstalled sonic, reinstalled it, and now i can burn audio! :)

This version of sonic is slightly different than the previous one. The old one was probably specialized for dell's mediadirect center.
