Damn Virus Problem!

So I was helping out my freind with what I thought was a simple virus problem.

I ran stinger, and found some type of backdoor virus, C:\Windows\Explorer.EXE.

It was a little fishy b/c regularrly it's all lowercase and bigger then 1mb.

I ran Hijack this and Startup [by Mike Lin] and just disabled it running from Startup. Restarted, and now it just logs me off after trying to log on!

I see the desktop background, but after like 1 minute of waiting for the icons and the start-up to show up it just log me off and I am back at the Log-on screen.

I can't even get to Safe-mode b/c I experience the same problem.

Please send me some tips to at least get Windows XP to working Order!

 

Do you have the XP cd?

You will need it to boot and run the repair

tried booting in sagfe mode or last known good?

 

yeah i have seen this many times at work... just run xp repair... make sure not to run the repair at the first screen press enter like you are going to do a fresh install... when it gets to the part about partitions just click leave file system intack.

UPDATE

due to my very own stupidity...i totally forgot which version of XP he had. And to my stroke of luck I brought Professional while he had Home.

So I wasn't able to do a repair on his OS.

I attempted the fix on this link

However [I belive] due to me having Professsional and him have Home it did not fix anything.

I was thinking of doing the fix here

But, I think it's too much work.

He will be getting his XP Home CD and hopefully there will be progress.

Any other suggestions would be great!
