I havent a clue what is wrong. New Maxtor HD and I cannot get it to boot.

I put it 98 se boot up disk then I get something saying windows shows you do not have a fat32 or partitioned disk.

The I run FDISk UNDER c: prompt and it says, "NO FIXED DISK PRESENT".

I try to put the Maxtor Balster boot cd in, it wont boot. Got a copy on the floppy and it works but eventually the screen goes white and computer freezes.

The Bios is no help because this sytem really doesnt have a true Bios. I have it under boot sequence, load local drives. Thats all it shows.

I just cannot get anything to work on this brand new hard drive. Jumpers are all correct etc.... I know its the computer not the HD.

Any thoughts before I toss the whole system out the window?

I have hooked up a new drive in another computer as slave and partition and formatted it there. Are you putting xp on or 98. If you use ntfs file system I don't think 98 will recognize it. If you throw it out the window send it north I want the drive..........

I read your other post and if you are using a p3 I really think you are limited to 120 gig hard drive. My first system was a ecs k7s5a mb and it was limited to a 120.

What up Steve. I am in shambles here.lol

The new computer I built had a burning smell and the PSU went. I ordered a 580w one on newegg that wont be here till Monday or Tuesday.

The new HD my fiance bought is for her IBM NetVista 1ghrz P3. Its a Maxtor 200gb HD. The guys at compusa said it would fit. I am not sure thats the case.

To make things worse, I cannot find my XP PRO disk anymore so I have to try and use the 98se.

I originally used xp pro on the IBM and the new HD wont recognize anything.

Thats the sitation I am in here, Basically I am computerless right now. I am only able to talk to you guys right now because I am at work.

Hey Patrick..When it rains it pours..sucks about the ps, hope all the other parts are ok. A friend of mine has a ecs board like I had but running a p4 1.6 and had a heck of a time getting windows on his 200 maxtor. It would freeze everytime and finally one time it did take. It worked for a couple of days then after he wiped the origional drive with windows on it the new 200 would not boot..He gave up trying and now uses it as a external drive. The older boards that do not support 48bit LBA are limited to the size of the drive you can use. Maxtor has a LBA enabler program you can put on a floppy but I am not to sure if it will work or not. But worth a try. What brand of PS did you order? Good luck man......SM

I really hope the PSU didnt trash my MOBO and CPU. I heard that most have fail safe on them when they crash. If it did mess thing sup, I will just use the warranty on the MOBO and CPU.

The IBM Netvista is an old computer. I bet it wont take the 200 gb hd.

I ordered a 580w emermax or something like that.

The more I think about it, I dont think a 200gb CAN WORK ON A p3 1.0 GHZ.

Do you think a 120 GB will work?

I am up and running now on my Fiance's computer. I just needed to FDISK then format the partitioned drive.
