    :waveHi all my fellow geeks,

I have a HP laptop / windows 8 64bit, with everything seemingly updated, including win defender. I have updated java with 32 bit though for some reason, on a 64bit o/s, but probably irrelevant at this stage as that's been like this since I got the laptop. Pc had been running fine until recently.

Then seemingly having issue with data being used, I just recently noted this when looking at bandwidth going up via the wireless connection. Even though there were no open programs/apps.

Task manager showed no cause for this, also noted on other recent task manager searches was a up to 90+% disk usage with nothing in task manager showing the offender high usage program. I also because of that changed Page file so its set to system managed size now.

I know (and hate) the start / tiles part of win 8 does updates, although I was pretty sure I had previously disabled these. Having to use a usb modem in the past with small bandwidth capacity, although not now have wireless connection. So I had really trimmed majority of the fat useless crap as it were in the past.

What I would like to find out from this post is information on an application that can see exactly what program or other app is using the bandwidth of the internet connection - so I can sniper it.

Basically so I don't want to mess around with "oh it might be this or that's". Preferably free software as its only for my personal use. I don't want to download something such as trial software and then have it be useless shortly, after with pop up reminders to get the full version..

    thanks for your input

I have updated java, flash is updated, although its 32 bit though for some reason, on a 64bit o/s, but probably irrelevant at this stage as that's been like this since I got the laptop. Task manager showed no cause for this, also noted on other recent task manager searches Disk load was a up to red 90+% with nothing in task manager showing the offender high usage program. I also, because of that, changed Page file so its set to system managed size now.

The issue seems to have come to the fore after stating to play runescape, think I accidentally tried the html5 version in Internet explorer. I don't know if java got its panties in a twist or something.. I had I.E set to open new pages in its own tab in I.E, but instead it would open the previous page already opened. It should have opened to blank page, when new tab was selected. I reset I.E to its stock install build by its reset option after this. Also emptied rubbish disk clean up and temp files and even history.

After I had shut down and restarted for the next day everything seemed fine. Other than this I am unsure as to how to locate the random usage, I know the wireless meter also accounts for pings to the wireless connection and the like, but it can go up .02mb every 4 or 5 seconds its not much but after an hour it stacks..

    thanks for your input

Best place to start with this is the Network section of Win 8's Resource Monitor which you can access via Task Manager. If you want to go deeper install Process Explorer. Use the PID in Resource Monitor to trace processes in Process Explorer. More info in this thread
