Friends: Could someone recommend a good book(s) on data recovery for an intermediate PC user? The selection out there is so huge I'm at a loss to buy a good one. Thanks for any suggestions.

    Wakenaam,
Before I suggest anything..., are you looking to backup your data for "safe keeping"? or are you trying to recover some lost data from already backed up data? If you can give me this information, I can help you with very simple answers.

pari22: Thanks for your response. I am looking for both actually. My PC just went through some crashes due to overheating/defective IDE cabling and the HDD lost huge chunks of data. Any suggestion of a good book(s) on data recovery and back-up would be most welcome. Thanks.

OK, thanks for that info. Helps alot. If you have win2k or xp, your OS has built-in backup tool, called "Backup Utility". You can find this by going to: Start - All Programs - Accessories - System Tools - Backup. This is a simple and easy to use program to backup personal pc data. Procedure is almost self explained. However, you need to choose where you want to backup the data to. If you backup your data to your own HDD, in your case, will not work. Because if you have HDD failure, you will have no BACKED UP data. So you need to go buy either external HDD, Tape drive, or simply DVD writer. This will depend on how much data you want to backup, and your financial situation, of course.
Now, to recover your lost data from old HDD. If your old HDD is not functioning, then... that's it. You're out of luck. sorry... If your old HDD IS functioning but not stable, connect it to a working machine and copy and paste your data and make a backup copy. If you need info on how to connect your old HDD, let me know. We'll go over it if you need it.
    Good Luck!

Pari22: Thanks for your response. I am more interested in buying a hard copy of a good book on data recovery. I can buy the software and do the recovery myself, but first I want to understand what I am doing. That's why I want to buy a book explaining how data recovery works. Googling gives me zillions of books on the subject, but I prefer to buy one recommended by someone in the forum.
