data recovery, folders not recognized

    i looked thru a bunch of old threads but none were quite like this so..

    on my external hd (elements w/ WD 400gb) i have a bunch of folders that are not recognized as such, instead they appear simply as named, non-descript, files

    my friend told me i need to do a hard drive recovery but im wondering which out of the ones on the site would be free and easiest to use in this situation.
