Data Recovery Software Question

Hey,

I am a PC user, but one of my friends uses mac. He has been recording in his home studio for the past 4 months and all of his work was deleted by someone. I dont know much about Macs but i figured if i removed the HDD and connected it via USB to my computer it would function the same as an external. Would the data recovery software work?

Any pointers and help would be great!

I doubt so, because majority of Mac hard drives formatted via Mac (Journal), which is cannot be read by a Windows based PC.
