I am trying to recover data from a damaged 40 gig hard disk, one shop told me $800.00 I laughed and walked out, another told me $50.00, what is the going rate for a task like this? Also is there some software or hardware I can purchase to do the job?

It is usually priced per GB, and how damaged the drive is.

If a drive is damaged to the point that to get data off of it, the drive has to be rebuilt, then you pay big bucks for the clean room, and expensive equipment to do it. If its a matter of dropping it into a reader and copying data off, then its reasonable.

That is why you see the extreme difference. I can tell you that any drive that does not mechanically function at all or has a major head crash, will not cost as little as 50.00.

Can you give me a ball park figure? Are there places that specialize in this? Not sure where to go here!

Yeah there are companies that specialize in it, but I don't know what are good and what are bad to make a recommendation.

I myself do recovery, but only if the drive hasn't completely ceased to work.

I don't have the money to setup a clean room to fix that kind of failure.
