Does anyone know of some cheap software that will assist in data recovery on an accidentally formatted HD?

If newly formatted and nothing has been written to the drive then the above will have pretty good results... if the drive has been written to mixed results in data recovery.... you will as you already know have to link that drive up as a slave and save the recovered data to the master drive... it will not save data to the same drive or partition.

Good ideas, but I forgot to mention that it is a single HD and I need a solution that will work with DOS.

Remove it from your PC and set it up as a slave drive on a friends PC as per Halo' s post. Don't write anymore to the drive as it is, in your PC. The more you do on your drive, the less you recover. Baz
