Each time I access my c:\downloads folder all my "Date Accessed " dates for my downloads are set to the current date. (see attachment for examples)

I have obviously altered a default somewhere but cannot remember which one. :-o

I have read about this problem before but a Google search did not help at all.

It is no great tragedy but I would like to set the date back to the actual date I last accessed a particular file and not blanket alter all files to the current date.

    Thanks in anticipation.

Wouldn't worry about it too much as it shows the date created anyway.

I know that. But I would like the "Date Accessed" date to show the actual date for another reason.

    Thanks anyhow. Bazza

I would suspect that your anti-virus (or other real-time scanners) has scanned the file as soon as it appears or whenever the folder is accessed.

What is your OS Bazza !

Maxwell is correct if you have an anti-virus set to automatic scan on boot, well each time you boot the anti-virus has to access the file so thats why you see the current date showed !

Might be your defrag program too. Do all of the 'Date Modified' and 'Date Accessed' show the same date and time stamp? In the pic they do, except for AdAware-core.zip.

Thanks Maxwell, Rustyjack and Plastidust for your replies. :cool

    Re "scanning"
I don't think this is happening.

No Autoscan on bootup as date stll shows as at 2 days ago (19/12/2009----Aussie format)

    Re: Dates are usually different.
My example (thumbnail) was only a small segment of C:\Downloads Folder to fit in with MG thumbnail size limit.

    All further suggestions welcome. :-D

You wouldn't happen to have X-Setup installed would you? Or maybe had it installed at one time? It has an option to enable or disable the 'Last Access' attribute. If disabled, the date/time stamp for last accessed won't be updated.

I thought you could set that somewhere via the 'Control Panel' but I sure can't find it at the moment.

Good to see you typing again.

    plastidust, thanks again. ;)

Not as far as I can remember. I think I might have tracked down the culprit. It maybe my setup of the Opera Browser. I can't check it out just yet as I have to wait for another day to click over before I can test my theory.

I think that whwn I download an MG program, using Opera, into my C:\Downloads Folder it updates all the Date Accessed dates for all Files in that Folder.

I will test it by checking the dates tomorrow in C:\Downloads BEFORE i download a program. First I will use Internet Explorer to download a program from MG and then check the dates. If IE does not automatically change the dates then I will know it is Opera.

Next I will download a program, using Opera, and check the dates again.
I think this will point me in one direction or another.

Back tomorrow, and see what happens. :-D

Is there a setting somewhere in Opera to change this? I'm using Opera but it doesn't seem to have this effect. Well, let us know.

I had this same problem once too, trouble is I can't remember how I fixed it:( Thought I might have done it through X-Setup. Will keep searching.

If it is Opera, I haven't found a specific configuration setting for this. I take it you're not using a download manager like Leechget or Free Download Manager.

If it is not Opera then the best solution seems to be a registry edit. On that note drag out Erunt.

Pull up REGEDIT and find your way to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\FileSystem now look for a DWORD named NtfsDisableLastAccessUpdate in your case you want the DWORD value set to = 1

I've attached a thumbnail view of how mine is set so you can see what I'm trying to say.

Once you've made sure the DWORD value is set to 1 and you've exited REGEDIT, reboot.

    Re: Date Accessed error

    Thanks again, plastidust.

I've had to put this on hold for the moment.
Tried to bootup my laptop early this morning. No lights, no power, nothing.
Off to my local Toshiba dealer. Needs a new motherboard AUD$600. :(
Not worth repairing. He had a 17"screen secondhand reconditioned Toshiba Satellite Pro P100, 100 gig harddrive, 2gig RAM, upgraded Graphics card, XP pro SP3,Vista compatible, in pretty good nick for AUD $550, so bought that. :)
I know I could have purchased a new W7, 15" screen, bigger hard drive for around the same price, but not a 17" screen model.
My last full backup was 12/12/2009, 10 days old so I used that.
After a bit of trouble tracking down my serial key as I had updated from V9 to v10 to v11 Home in Acronis True Image I restored that from my external drive to the 100gig hard drive. It didn't take too long and booted up first time. :cool
There are a few little nigglies that I have to sort out before reurning to this problem.

So it will probably be a few days before I get back to "Date Accessed", so bear with me.

Thanks again for your continuing help.

"Tried to bootup my laptop early this morning. No lights, no power, nothing." Arrrg. What a way to start the day.

Sounds like a double edged sword though. Fried mobo=new toy.

Good deal on computer:) And since it is Vista compatible, if/when you're ready for W7 it should be be able to handle it. Might need more ram(no big thing). Good thing you had that back up. Sure makes life easier. As far as the "Date Accessed" problem, it will probably disappear.

    Have fun and Merry Christmas.

I try to do a Full backup 2-3 times a week. I don't have a huge amount of data (aroud 25 gigs) and the backup progress just needs checking a few times as it runs. I might have a read or meal while it runs. I also do a validation of the backup so it will be OK if I have to restore it. I am just getting back into the habit of frequent backups after a long time off computing. I know I can do incremental backing up instead but prefer a full backup onto an external drive.

My blown mobo taught me to have the backup program (Acronis True Image) installed on the same external drive as well as licence key numbers on a file there as they are no use if you have blown mobo if they are on your normal hard drive ( and you can't accress them) :-o. :-D
