datetime stamp

This problem has been around for a long time, but I was just reminded.

A program I've had for years showed a date created as today and date last modified as 6 days ago.

What is the purpose of the date stamp if it shows such nonsense? Can it be fixed so it shows genuine information?

Did you copy/move the program? If you did, then "moving" doesn't move the file at all... it simply reassigns a different address within the hard drive index, and counts as a newly created file.

It also matters whether your hard disk is formatted as FAT32 or NTFS.

Another thing I believe could affect it is running a chkdsk, whether you run the check yourself, or if Windows schedules and runs it with your permission. If any data in the file is fixed, it could alter the datetime stamp.

You are telling me how it works now, which I already know and am complaining about and asking how to fix it.

It makes perfect sense to change the Last Accessed because you accessed it. Duh. But it is pure insanity to change the creation date away from whenever it was created unless you recompile it.

If I take my car to a mechanic to fix the brakes he wouldn't just tell me the next day that the brakes do what they do. Surely someone has come up with something by now to make datetime stamps work logically.
