    My pc has been running really slow lately, and I notice that sometimes there's a process 'DBEngine.exe' that seems to be doing a lot of something. Over 12gb of reads, not much memory used. Anyone know what this program is, and is it a problem?

    The document you mentioned talks about Crystal Reports, but I don't have that software - something else must be causing DBEngine.exe to run, but it's always there, doing a LOT of reads - I'm really concerned, because when I did a search for DBEngine.exe, I don't seem to have an indentifiable program by that name. Whatever it is, it's using up a lot of I/O, and I'm thinking that this might be my problem.

    btw, I've already run ccleaner, Wise Registry Cleaner, System Mechanic, Systemworks, Spybot S&D and Dial-A-Fix - I also use AVG Internet Security (which has AV and spyware components) -

    thanks -

    Well, I got an error (I got it 3 times) when I tried running HijackThis:
    ==================================
    An unexpected error has occurred at procedure: modMain_CheckOther1Item()
    Error #5 - Invalid procedure call or argument

    Please email me at merijn@spywareinfo.com, reporting the following:
    * What you were trying to fix when the error occurred, if applicable
    * How you can reproduce the error
    * A complete HijackThis scan log, if possible

    Windows version: Windows NT 5.01.2600
    MSIE version: 7.0.5730.11
    HijackThis version: 1.99.1

    This message has been copied to your clipboard.
    Click OK to continue the rest of the scan.
    ================================

    BUT it appears that the program did run - here's the logfile (attached)
    thanks!

    OK, I did all those things - at first I couldn't uninstall the Disk Benchmark software, had to unregister msiexec.exe and re-register it - but got it uninstalled. Thanks for helping me find that one -

    Now I've got another problem - well, actually it may be two problems that have become much worse for some reason. First, I'm getting an error saying "Please wait while Windows configures DocumentViewer" followed by an error "The feature you are trying to use is on a CD-ROM or other removable disk that is not available - Insert the 'DocumentViewer' disk and click OK." I try to cancel the install and get "1706 A valid source could not be found - Windows Installer cannot continue." No matter how many times I try to kill the window, it pops right back up. Then I start getting a .NET Framework error: "An unhandled exception has occurred in a component of your application. Click continue and application will ignore this error and attempt to continue. Object reference not set to an instance of an object."

    Holy smoke - what does all that stuff mean??

    I'm beginning to think that my computer is so totally goobered-up that I'm gonna have to bite the bullet and re-install Windows (and about a million apps). I really, really don't to do it, though - what do you think?
    thanks,
    steve

    Well, I think I've solved the problem - apparently DocumentViewer is part of the HP software for my printer. I uninstalled it, and began receiving a similar error about PhotoGallery, another HP program. The 'installation' error was somehow linked to the .NET Framework error, because when I used Task Manager to kill the installation, the .NET error disappeared too.

    I eventually uninstalled ALL the HP software, went to their website, downloaded the current version and re-installed it. Amazingly, all those problems went away. Now I'm back to my original problem, the system 'freezing' - well, it doesn't really 'freeze,' but when I click on a directory in Explorer, sometimes it takes up to a minute to display the contents. In fact, anything that accesses a directory (like my video editing software) will exhibit the same long delay. I realize that this is a different problem from the one covered by this thread, so I'll submit a new thread on that one - I have some ideas, but I'd like to hear other opinions about why it may be happening.

    Thanks very much for all the help, guys, I was afraid I'd really messed things up for good - I did learn that some of these "registry cleaners' can cause real problems if you allow them to fix things on their own!
