DC not on network

After a few power blips in the night we find this morning our domain controller cannot see outside of itself, not can it be seen. The static IP says its connected but it cannot ping the router or any of the other machines. When switched to dynamic it fails to get an IP address.

I have change the NIC, changed the cable and plugged it into 3 different switches all with the same result.

I am totally stuck as to what might be causing this. Does anyone have any suggestions to offer?

 

Here's an update. In safe mode with networking we get internet access and the ability to see the network.

I ran HijackThis and it reported a broken internet connection because of a missing mswsock.dll. BUt get this, the file is reported as missing from

C:\Documents and Settings\administrator\windows\system32\

Now there is no system32 folder under the administrators windows folder so I'm guessing something has changed the path.

If that helps anyone shed some light on the cause please let me know.

all led to malware issues.

 

Well DUH to me, of course they all refered malware, because the strange way that system32 is listed in hijack this. It could have happened without malware too.

I'll believe that the dll is missing or corrupt, just not it's location shown in hijack this. I misread your post thinking that you meant the directory had changed it path instead of the dll changing it's path.

Can you do a System Restore?
