..first my thanks, that little Restore prog is light years better than the pay-for options

    ..oookkkk..

..i'm running an HP pav 9715, 128 Ram (soon to be 2*256), 2 drives of 20GB, (soon to have a third of 500GB added) cd writer, (soon + dvd writer) and wifi net LAN connection, at least these are the bits that need to keep running when the power goes down here which it does frequently, even if its only off then on, it kills the system..

..i live at 6N 124E near enough, at the end of a very long and dodgy supply line..

..sooo, i wondered if i could link the whole thing to a 12V heavy duty battery, having taken out the built in transformer, add a charger for refill when the supplies are running, and so not lose my net connections and have my comp switch off. i assume each bit will need a power control bridge ?

..any help to kep me up and running in jungle conditions much apreciated

It would be possible but would be a huge task to undertake you would need to step the voltage down to 5v and 3.3,you would also have to mock up some kind of 5v power good and power on switch relay

why not just buy a UPS,I honestly think you would end up frying your computer and the parts you would need to construct your homemade UPS would probably cost more than a store bought one

..thanks Ricky, and i thought UPS was a postal delivery service..

..i wasn't looking for a switch in/out machine tho, but to run the whole shebang off a DC battery on trickle charge, here from a charger, later, from a solar panel as i may be moving beyond the electricity, wifi reception is however excellent from the top of a nearby hill..

Just google (actually I prefer alltheweb ) ...:) :) rememer, you could just cut the lighter plug in and attach the wires directly to the battery terminals. Make sure you are running the laptop with the battery in (for voltage differences, etc.)
