DCC problem - Me to XP

Help! Am trying to move my personal files between my old Me machine and my new XP. Was told to try a D(irect)C(able)C(onnection) using a serial port null modem cable. All has been good - have succeded in getting the two machines to link up together as Host and Guest but... I've tried "shared folders" but nothing seems to transfer. I'm sure I've missed something "simple" ( probably me! ) but don't seem able to figure this one out. Probably due to settings somewhere ??? Any advice would be appreciated .
