hi, i am running windows xp pro sp3.
when i run DCOMCNFG i get an error message:

MMC has detected an error in a snap-in. it is recommended that you shut down and restart MMC.

also in event viewer, i get the error:

    Event Type: Error
    Event Source: DCOM
    Event Category: None
    Event ID: 10010
    Date: 6/9/2009
    Time: 7:05:14 PM
    User:
    Computer:
    Description:
The server {D61A27C6-8F53-11D0-BFA0-00A024151983} did not register with DCOM within the required timeout.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

    Details
    Product: Windows Operating System
    Event ID: 10010
    Source: DCOM
    Version: 5.0
    Component: System Event Log
    Symbolic Name: EVENT_RPCSS_SERVER_START_TIMEOUT
Message: The server %1 did not register with DCOM within the required timeout.

    Explanation

The Component Object Model (COM) infrastructure tried to start the named server; however, the server did not reply within the required timeout period. There might be a deadlock, or the program might not have responded to the server initialization code within the timeout period of two minutes.

    User Action

If the problem continues to occur, contact the program vendor.

    To determine the program vendor

    1. Using Regedit, navigate to the following registry value
    HKCR\Clsid\clsid value\localserver32
The clsid value is the information displayed in the message.
    2. In the right pane, double-click Default. The Edit String dialog box is displayed. Leave this dialog box open.
    3. Click Start, and then click My Computer.
    4. Using the information displayed in the Value data box of the Edit String dialog box, navigate to the program.
    5. Right-click the program name, and then click Properties.
The Properties dialog box for the program is displayed.
    6. To determine who the vendor is for this program, refer to the Version tab.

i can not find HKCR\Clsid\clsid value\localserver32 in the registry.

i would appreciate any help you can give me, thank you

    Hello,

When looking, just to clarify. The "HKCR is HKEY_Classes_Root" and also, it seems weird that it is missing on your PC. Are you able to open the rest of the Snap ons, or even add them once MMC is up?

    Thanks.

  3. nicholas1956

    nicholas1956 Private E-2

yeah, but i'm not sure what the clsid value is?
    but i can add snap-ins

  4. Elder_Usr

    Elder_Usr Sergeant

    Clsid = {D61A27C6-8F53-11D0-BFA0-00A024151983}

Also, what I meant was. could you add the snap-ins that you were looking for, such as Event Viewer...ect

    Thanks,

  5. nicholas1956

    nicholas1956 Private E-2

yes, i have event viewer and services snapins

  6. nicholas1956

    nicholas1956 Private E-2

but i will try the clsid value thank you so much

  7. nicholas1956

    nicholas1956 Private E-2

    ok, but i don't see localserver32

  8. nicholas1956

    nicholas1956 Private E-2

i can add snap-ins in mmc, but not when i run DCOMCNFG

  9. nicholas1956

    nicholas1956 Private E-2

    i'm sorry , i found localserver!
    the vender is microsoft.
    program is removable storage manager

    Elder_Usr Sergeant

Hmm. That sounds about right. Now to figure out exactly what went on there.
Seems that DCOM tried to talk to the Removable Storage Manager, and it didn't react in time. I wonder if there is a way to go around it and still run your DComcnfg.

    Still researching...

  11. nicholas1956

    nicholas1956 Private E-2

ok, but would that explain the snap-in error as well?

  12. Elder_Usr

    Elder_Usr Sergeant

Yeah. Because the Snap-In error that you were getting is that its trying to load that service, under the Component Services (Which when running DCOMCNFG, it brings that up, Event Viewer, and Services. Each can be added individually.) If you don't mind me asking. Why were you going into your DCOMCNFG in the first place?

  13. nicholas1956

    nicholas1956 Private E-2

i went to dcomcnfg because i was getting a DCOM error event id: 10010 and was told that running DCOMCNFG might solve the problem

    Question.
When/Where you getting this error at? Is it at boot? or when you open an application?

(Is looking into the original issue.)

    Elder_Usr Sergeant

Think found a fix for the original Issue:

    http://seer.entsupport.symantec.com/docs/262914.htm

Open up Services, and look for Removable Storage Management, and stop it.
Then, do as mentioned in the link:

i'm not that computer savy, but i have been getting that event error for a few years. but recently i installed magicdisc virtual drives , and i decided to do a backup. so i went to run windows backup utility and the computer just hangs without loadind backup. so i went to event viewer to see if there was any errors and the event id: 10010 was there. i googled the error message and found a message that said running DCOMCNFG might solve the problem. and here i am trying to get a backup. i would like to solve this problem before backup. but running backup still might be a problem.

Try what i mentioned below, and let me know if that works.

    :)

  18. nicholas1956

    nicholas1956 Private E-2

below what? i'm not getting a message.

  19. Elder_Usr

    Elder_Usr Sergeant

That's what I meant, see possibly if that works. If it doesn't, we'll look into it further.

  20. nicholas1956

    nicholas1956 Private E-2

    did what you said, but LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\CLASSES\APPID\{D61A27C6-8F53-11D0-BFA0-00A024151983}
dosen't exist, but i will reboot and see what happens.

    Elder_Usr Sergeant

Best of luck, let me know how it goes :)

ok, rebooted and tried backup utility and got a box saying: the backup utility cannot connect to the removable storage service. this service is required for use of tape drives and other backup devices. please exit and start the removable storage service using system services function of the management console.

  23. Elder_Usr

    Elder_Usr Sergeant

Alright, so that is half the battle. Try and do this now:

Open up Services, and look for Removable Storage Management, and Restart it. See if that works.

  24. nicholas1956

    nicholas1956 Private E-2

ok, i started the removable storage service and it started and stopped right away. it is set to start automatically.

  25. nicholas1956

    nicholas1956 Private E-2

when i try to start the service, i get a box saying:the removable storage service on local computer started and then stopped. some services stop automatically if they have no work to do, foe example, the performance and logs alerts service.

Okay. Now we're going to try and do the opposite and see if it fixes it.

I have also attached a .reg file for you to put back into your registry from my PC. Also, the registry files that I gave you, you're going to have to take and change the file extension. (You can do this by opening up My Computer, go to Tools, and then to Folder Options. Then View, and in the selections, uncheck "Hide Extensions for known file types." then click apply and Ok.)Then, rename both attachments to backup.reg and backup1.reg and follow the steps below:

    12. Use REGEDIT (NOT Regedt32) and go to File, and Import and import backup.reg into your registry.
    14. Use REGEDIT (NOT Regedt32) and go to File, and Import and import backup1.reg into your registry.
    1. Click Start | Run. Type dcomcnfg
    2. Expand Component Services
    3. Expand Computers
    4. Expand My Computer
    5. Expand DCOM Config
    6. Scroll down until you see Removable Storage Manager
    7. Right-click Removable Storage Manager and click Properties
    8. Click the Location tab
    9. Check the checkbox Run application on this computer (see Figure 1)
    10. Click OK
    11. Close Component Services
    16. Reboot

Then when your computer gets back up, give it a try, and don't forget to set this setting back to normal.
(You can do this by opening up My Computer, go to Tools, and then to Folder Options. Then View, and in the selections, check "Hide Extensions for known file types." then click apply and Ok.)

    Attached Files:

ok, did as you said but backup doesn"t load.

  28. nicholas1956

    nicholas1956 Private E-2

i did as you said and copied those backup.reg files to the registry, i rebooted , and tried to run backup utility but it won't load.

    Elder_Usr Sergeant

Restart the Removable Storage Management under services and it should.

  30. nicholas1956

    nicholas1956 Private E-2

ok, i got this box that says: the removable storage service on local computer started and then stopped. some services stop automatically if they have no work to do,for example, the performance logs and alerts service.

  31. Elder_Usr

    Elder_Usr Sergeant

Hmm, and when you try to run your backup what happens? Btw, what are you using for backup software?

    Thanks.

  32. nicholas1956

    nicholas1956 Private E-2

its windows backup utility, and when i try to run it nothing happens, but when you had me delete that key from registry it loaded with that message that said it needed removable storage service running, but it just starts and stops. so we tried copying those backup.reg file and now backup utility won't load, puter just hangs. maybe we should delete that registry kek again, i don't know. what do you think?

  33. Elder_Usr

    Elder_Usr Sergeant

Yeah no, the reason why it stated that it needed the removable storage service running. Is because after doing the steps before, it disabled the service. And it needed it to run. Now we have to figure out why its not on your computer. Did you change the files from .txt to .reg and did you copy them into your registry? In the proper directories?

    LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\CLASSES\CLSID\{D61A27C6-8F53-11D0-BFA0-00A024151983}

    LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\CLASSES\APPID\{D61A27C6-8F53-11D0-BFA0-00A024151983}

Let me know if they are there, and it seems to still not work. Because those keys should be working as far as registration goes. Did you re-enable the check box in the Component Services?

    Thanks.

  34. nicholas1956

    nicholas1956 Private E-2

yeh those keys are there, but backup utility still won't load
yep checked box in component services

    Okay.

    Three more things to try.

    Try this one first:

    http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=kb;en-us;235032&x=6&y=15

    Then Try this:

Look up those keys in the registry, and make sure the permissions are set accordingly for these two users. If not add them.

    Authenticated users: Read access
    Network Service: full control

    Let me know.

  36. nicholas1956

    nicholas1956 Private E-2

ok, set the permissions on those key and rebooted, then i tried to start the removable storage service but it just stops

Did you try the KB article (Btw its late here, so its probably the latest troubleshooting i'm going to be doing until about 16 hrs from now.)

Let me know, i'll look tommorow when i get online.

    Thanks,
