    Hi

I have had a problem on my pc for a few weeks now, but every now again it disapears. Just lately though it seems to be getting worse.

The computer runs very very slow, ie if i am view pictures it take ages for them to load etc or a web page takes along time to load.

Wen i try to close the computer down. it comes up wiv a box that DDE server is not responding and to end program now click ok, which is what i do. Then it take alittle while to shut down but does go off.

Sometimes also wen i used VLC view it wont run and wen i close down it also says the same thing.

Im not sure if this is a mailware problem. I am running windows xp media and have 180 gig hd and 400 external. plus 1024 ram. My pc used to be very fast and it is sometimes but is slowing down more and more. I run AVG anti virus and Ad-ware removal, i also use cc clean up and do defragment and do the normal pc maintance regulary.

Any help would be most grateful
    many thanx

    Welcome to Majorgeeks!

Please follow our standard cleaning procedures which are necessary for us to provide you support. Also there are steps included for installing, running, and posting HijackThis logs as attachments.
    • Run ALL the steps in this Sticky thread READ & RUN ME FIRST Before Asking for Support
    • Make sure you check version numbers and get all updates.
    • Very Important: Make sure you tell us the results from running the tutorial...was anything found? Were you unable to complete any of the scans?...Were you unable to download any of the tools?...Did you do the on-line scans as suggested? etc.
    • After doing ALL of the above you still have a problem make sure you have booted to normal mode and run the steps in the below link to properly use HijackThis and attach a log:
Make sure you also rename HijackThis.exe as suggested in the procedures. Use analyse.exe for the new name. This is very important due to some new infections going around.
    • When you return to make your next post, make sure you attach the following logs and that you have run these scans in the following order too:
      • CounterSpy
      • AVG Antispyware log - ONLY IF NEEDED you were not able to run CounterSpy
      • Bitdefender - from step 6
      • Panda Scan - from step 6
      • runkeys.txt - the log from GetRunKey.bat
      • newfiles.txt - the log from ShowNew.bat
      • HijackThis
NOTE: You can only attach 3 files in a single message so it will require that you use two messages to attach all of these logs!

    You did not rename HJT
    C:\Program Files\Hijackthis\HijackThis.exe--->C:\Program Files\Hijackthis\analyse

    What is this?
    C:\Documents and Settings\Shell\Desktop\rhoebvhtoibryvo

Please use add/remove programs to uninstall:
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 10"
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 11"
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 4"
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6"
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 9

download HOSTER and then follow the below steps.

    * Unzip Hoster to a convenient folder such as C:\Hoster
    * Run Hoster.exe, click Restore Original Hosts and then click OK.
    * Click the X to exit the program

Please copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixME.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.

    Now attach new logs for:

    * GetRunKey
    * ShowNew
    * HJT

changing HJT.exe to analyse(.exe) will not make it unusable by others.
Are you doing this as an account with administrative rights?

Let me know how the rest of it goes.....

C:\Program Files\Hijackthis\analyse\HijackThis.exe ---> right click "HijackThis.exe" and rename to analyse!

Please copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixME.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.

Let's try one more HJT log.

What problems are you having, if any. Tell me how it is running.

    Hi

Well i think i have now re named it correctly.

I am attacthing a final log of HJT.

As i said at the very first post the problem of DDE server not shuting down wen i go to shut down the pc does not always happen everytime. I did not have it last night, and i have only turned the pc on a few hrs ago and not turned it off.

Last night a box came up wen i shut down it was something like mscmsnfig and had to end that box. That is the first time that has come up. The pc only has a slow running at times as well, other than that i note no other problems. As for the DDE i will only no over a period of time if its finally gone. Did you note where u think that was coming from.

many thanx for you help with this and im sorry it took while to sort out the HJT renaming.

Everything looks clean ....but do this:

Go to start / run / type "msconfig" without quotes and when it opens...check that it is normal startup mode ....then go to the startup tab and tell me what all is showing there.
When done ...click cancel to get out.

The KB article I gave you indicates that you may need to install the Hotfix as stated for Windows XP however you do need to contact Microsoft to get the Hotfix. You will have to wait for them to reply. This is not something we can help you with. In addition, this is more than likely not a malware issue.

Thanx yes i saw it said bout hotfix, but it did say that it might b best to wait till a new one is out or something. i tried to find an email adress to contact them, but cld not.

but thanx yes i did not no right from the start, if it was malware or not i did state this. but as the pc was running really slow i thought mayb it was bit of both.

    thanx shell

In that article they gave you the below link:

    http://support.microsoft.com/contactus/?ws=support

This will give you options on how to contact them. You just need to follow the appropriate links.

I did not mean to hijack this thread from Tim! He can continue to help you with any other malware issues you may or may not have. But based on what I saw below, it appears that you are clean. I would recommend uninstalling the CounterSpy trial now which is what Tim probably would have said to do next.

    Hi

Just to keep u updated i went to that web site but it wont let me email them says i have to contact my pc provider which i will have to do.

But if they have a hot fix i dont understand why i cant have it, or is it that my pc provider will have one.

Wen i turned the pc off this morning it said DDE server not responding still. but apart from that the computer is running sluggish. It seems to take ages to open things up ie windows on internet and things like add remove programs takes ages to come up.

    Thanx for help again

As Chas stated ..all of that could be caused by the DDE failure to broadcast ....check with the computer manufacturer for updates.
You have the latest Java ...the registry patch was to stop it from nagging you.

You may uninstall any programs we had you download (including CounterSpy, etc).

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:

    1. If we used Pocket Killbox during your cleanup, do the below
    * Run Pocket Killbox and select File, Cleanup, Delete All Backups
    2. If we used ComboFix you can delete the ComboFix.exe file and associated C:\combofix.txt log that was created.
    3. If we user SDFix you can delete all the SDFix related files and folders from your Desktop or whereever you installed it.
    4. If we used VundoFix, you can delete the VundoFix.exe file and the C:\VundoFix Backups folder and C:\vundofix.txt log that was created.
    5. If we had your run FixWareOut, you can delete the Fixwareout.exe file and the C:\fixwareout folder.
    6. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    7. You can delete the ShowNew.Zip and GetRunkey.Zip files and the files that you extracted from the ZIP files. You can also delete the C:\newfiles.txt and C:\runkeys.txt logs that were created
    8. If you are running Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
    * go back to step 8 of the READ & RUN ME to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
    * Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    9. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
