Deactivating Norton

I have Norton Internet Security 2004. I've never had much problem with it and it seems to be doing a good job of protecting me, however, from various things I've read I think it might be one of the major things responsible for slowing down my system. I would like to try the AVG 7.5 Free. My question is this: Is there a way for me to deactivate Norton so that it will not run at start up, without totaling removing it? Then I could download and install the AVG and see if that helps my situation. If it does, then I would be willing to remove Norton.

    Thank you

Its not recommended to run 2 antivirus apps at the same time.
My suggestion: Norton is a system hog and it would be best to remove it
Try this tool, will remove most traces of NA2004
    SymNRT

    a) The two (or more) antiviruses will consume tremendous resources slowing your computer down to snail's pace and maybe causing it to hang/freeze frequently, sometimes even at startup itself.

    b) The two antivirus softwares may detect each other's activity, and consider their behavior virus-like. This may result in one or both of the softwares trying to neutralize one another (maybe by quarantining or deleting each others core files). This may corrupt the softwares, or render them useless, and probably even cause a computer crash to boot (pun intended).

    c) If two antivirus softwares try to scan a file at the same time, there may be a conflict that will corrupt the file or prevent it from opening/running normally.

Thanks for the info. I can't seem to get to the link you provided for getting the tool which will remove most traces of Norton 2004. I keep getting a page that says the web page can't be displayed. When I click on the link to test my connection it reports back that there are no problems with my connection. You know, I wasn't having these problems until I downloaded IE7. Do you happen to know how I can get IE6 back?

    Thanks,

I seen that AVG has a virus/firewall program. Would you recommend this? I will need to have a firewall to replace the one that's included in my Norton so I was wondering. I have heard Kerio recommended as a firewall. If you see this and could answer right away I'd appreciate it.

    Thanks,

I went ahead and removed Norton and I installed the AVG with firewall. The verdict is still out. I didn't get any sign like you said you got -- yet. It does seem to boot a lot faster but Internet and even opening files is s-l-o-w! I scanned with that CCleaner and with SpySweeper and nothing was found. I'm just finishing a scan with A2-Malware; it's almost complete and again nothing found. I just don't know what to think or do if things don't straighten out. It seems to have gotten so bad, as far as Internet and even programs and files opening, since I installed the IE7.

I have a question though. I have the free version of Spybot S&D which I've been using for a long time. I also have a new one called Xoftspy. I don't allow either of these to run at start up or in the background. As long as that is the case, they aren't going to interfere with anything, are they?

    Thanks,
    Nikilet

I just wanted to let you know that since removing Norton and installing this AVG with Firewall, things seem to be working good (I'm almost scared to say that). My boot up time is considerably less, my files and programs are again opening right up like they should and even the Internet is better. There's only one problem, still, and I feel certain that's just something between IE7 and Outlook Express. If I click on a link in an e-mail, there's a definite delay before the requested page opens. I should go into my Hotmail account and open something there and then click on a link, just to see if it does the same thing as I remember reading that there is no version 7 update for Outlook Express, that Microsoft will be coming out with a completely new e-mail program.

Anyway, thanks for all your help. I hope things stay status quo so I don't have to come back and bug you for a while!
