Got up this morning and when booted up, found the battery totally discharged. It is currently charging...50 minutes to full charge. Any guess as to what happened?

So we are assuming this is a notebook?

Was it plugged in over night?

Yeah...laptop. It was put to sleep last night. Opened it this morning and the background screen appeared but nothing happened. No log in screen...no response to mouse or ctrl/alt/delete. Pushed power button, waited a few and powered back up. Took a while to get back to my desktop and battery was showing a 2 hr time to recharge.

Too hard to tell right now what happened. It could have been a loose charger connection or it may mean your battery or your charger are failing. It will be interesting to note if it happens again.

    How old is the battery?

Replace the original one months ago....all has been fine up until today. Just weird!!

Yeah it is odd. Was the replacement a genuine replacement?

Yes.....but it always showed a very small amount of uncharged area on the icon....until today. If I could find a reasonably priced laptop with more than 4 gigs of ram, I might toss this POS.

And did you calibrate the new battery to the laptop? This should be in the owner's guide. Calibration synchronizes the charge to the laptop's battery monitoring circuits.

If not in your userguide, see this: How to recalibrate the battery in your Windows 10 laptop.

No, not the battery owner's guide. Your laptop's.

Hahahaahaha.......... I don't recall how old this beast is, but it came with Win 8 ....I have everything set for battery usage and sleep as I have for years. I think perhaps my wife walked too close to it, since she has the power to screw up computers just by being near them.

That's not old. We use two Windows 7 laptops daily. One was new in 2011 and the other in 2013. The 2011 got a new battery in 2017. (not from Acer)

First: Open command prompt,as admin and type in
    Code:
    powercfg energy
It will run for a minute and then show errors, warnings and informational with numbers for each
    The report is at C:\Windows\system32\energy-report.html
You have to drag it to the desktop. It says it can't find the report if you try to open it in the system32 location.

Don't worry about errors and warning. I have several of those on both laptops.
Errors, it doesn't like that I don't have USB turned off.

Warnings, it complains that I want the screen to remain on for longer than 10 or 15 minutes.

Second: If you want a decent replacement for the laptop's built in battery monitor, I have found this to be good
    https://batterybarpro.com/basic.php
I tried 4 programs and liked this the best.

    What am I looking for?

Open C:\Windows\system32 and scroll past all the folders in the right pane. Start looking in the files under "e" for energy-report.html
move it to the desktop and you will see the report.

That doesn't seem correct, unless it was only down to % in the 90's.
I learned something in the last month. To keep a device's battery working better and longer, it should not be charged above 80% and not allowed to dip below 20%. I couldn't believe that so I went searching and sure enough, I found lots of articles stating the same thing.

Scroll down to where it says Recent usage.
This data provides an accurate record of your battery level and the times it was recorded, including making a new entry whenever your power cord is attached, or when the computer is turned off or put to sleep.

Check the Capacity section in the power report.
The capacity indicator shows the exact milliwatt-hour (mWh) values at different percentages.
Compare these values with the official capacity in your battery manufacturer’s specifications.

No recent usage report. Capacity reported as:
    Design Capacity 31680
    Last Full Charge 32644

Maybe I need to unplug and wait until it is almost discharged before plugging it back in??

Now that is interesting. Apparently it charged above the full capacity! o_O

Indeed. I pulled the plug yesterday, discharged it to about 25% and then plugged back in....it charged to 100%. This morning it reports 99%.

From 100% down to 99% with it plugged in and turned off?

    Yup....

You have one strange battery there.
I have no explanation that it charges more than the capacity of the battery and it loses charge overnight plugged in and turned off.

I guess it would lose more if it wasn't plugged in and turned off. Because we know it loses most of the charge if it is put to sleep overnight.

Indeed!! Today states 98.1%....I give up!!
