Dead CPU?

I replaced my heatsink and fan with a zalman today and after the install my comp wont boot up. Shortly into the post its stops on post code 87 and shuts down. I tried reinstalling the HS and fan, reseating the ram, and resetting CMOS. I think it may be the CPU because there are no beeps and that is the only thing I really touched during the install. Does anyone have any suggestions or should I just RMA it.

 

Try running the systemwith the CPU removed. Any difference? Or exactly the same?

Could it be that that memory is faulty?

 

I'm not sure. I've tried one stick in each slot and its the same thing but I'm gonna try a stick that i know is good later.

I would try reseating the CPU again and make sure that you install it correctly this time. Cleaning off the thermal paste with rubbing alcohol, and then putting only the amount of thermal paste as a grain of rice.

 

Pay a visit to <http://www.bioscentral.com> and tell us which error message corresponds to "post code 87". To answer that question, you'll need information about your BIOS that we don't have .

Figuring out what that error message actually means will save you a lot of time and us a lot of guesswork.

 

This sounds dumb but, have you got the heatsink on correctly?

If it's on in reverse it will not work.
