i have a compaq f700 laptop ..i removed Vista and installed xp pro (not part of the problem) my battery will no longer hold a charge, in fact the laptop wont run on ac alone and has to be plugged in for a day just to boot...is this the battery????

Hi jxkxr, how did the battery perform before you installed XP?

it does sound like the battery, but it is a bit odd it has happened the same time as the install of XP.

umm, i wasnt clear...it happened quite a bit after the xp install...i formatted it before it ever booted the first time :-D i began having the problems about 18-22 months after i bought the laptop, i bought it new

i thought you could run any laptop from ac power without the battery even in???? friggin batteries are so expensive i am just making sure it isnt something else

Correct. If you can't, then something else is wrong.
It sounds like either the connector from the power cord to the motherboard is bad or the adapter on your power cord is bad.
