Alienware m1500 series laptop will not loadup os. The keyboard will not respond so that I can do a recovery. I took it apart and found all connections are good. What can I do?

Hi my friend , Happy New Year :)

You can try an external keyboard showing if it works or not :wave

Are you getting to the BIOS screen at least?

I couldn't find anything on Dell's Alienware Forums. This is what I found on Yahoo! Answers for an unresponsive keyboard on an Alienware laptop:

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Apparently, some of its settings have changed. Shut down the laptop, remove the battery for a few seconds and then replace it. Then start the laptop again. Reinstall the drivers and software...

If this does not fix the keyboard, perform a ‘System Restore’ to revert the system settings to a point before the problem started. To do so, click “Start> All Programs > Accessories> System Tools> System Restore” and select an appropriate date."

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Another thing you could try is replacing the CMOS battery.

    Hope this helps.

If the cmos battery was out would the the bios page show up at start up?

Yes. The CMOS battery powers a section of the BIOS in which user options are stored. Without the CMOS battery, every time the machine was disconnected from external power, it would reset to the default BIOS settings.

Did you try to access the BIOS setup with the external keyboard?

yes I did but no response to the external keyboard either

    I have a few questions.

    How old is this laptop?
What is the exact model number?
    Has it been dropped?

I can say that I have seen malware make hardware act funny. My Dell XPS 8300 is extant proof.

Since this is probably going to take a while to sort out, you might as well provide all the stats on your computer; make, model, the programs you're running, hardware settings, etc. To do this, just follow along.

OK, first you need to download a program called Speccy from the following page:

    http://majorgeeks.com/Speccy_d6358.html

Install the program and don't change any of the settings. Just leave them at their default settings
Run the program and let it analyze your system (takes less than 30 seconds). When it finishes click FILE >>Save As Text
Save the text file to your desktop.
Go to your desktop and open the text file with notepad (just double click on it). Edit out any personal information including serial numbers, then save it.
If you know how to archive files using the ZIP or RAR format then go ahead and archive the text file. If not, then don't worry about it, just leave the text file as it is.

Then go to http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=86880 to learn how to attach a file to your post.

Post another message in this thread with the aforementioned text file attached.

That will give people here something to work with in diagnosing your problem.
