    hey everyone,

my laptop was working fine until it suddenly froze, upon re-starting it, now i dont even get a picture on the screen or a C prompt or anything, it still makes the usual start up noises etc but im getting no picture and im not sure what to do. if it helps its an NEC Versanote, a few years old.

    thanks

    Making Noises = not dead.
possibly the connection to the screen is dead from numerous open close actions. My first reaction. Any votes out there for or against?

Probably just a dead backlight,,,does not mean screen is bad just bulb,,had same problem with a gateway model,,,try a external monitor on your laptop if you have a port for it,,,good luck,,,Glenn :),,,this will confirm that laptop is not dead,,,

I agree you should check to see if the external monitor port gives you a picture. If it does, then it's likely the screen or a connection to the screen is damaged. That's not an uncommon problem. You can usually send it back to the manufacturer to be serviced. It isn't cheap to do, but it's cheaer than a new laptop.

I agree. It might be backlight, or perhaps power connectors to the screen? Either way, if its in warantee go for the manufacturer, if not a local computer shop should be able to sort you out. Ribbon cables are a b*tch to fix, so it would probably cost quite a bit.

Just another Idea, If no noises or lights system may indeed be down completely,,,but you may want to try to boot computer with the system restore disk, Keep in mind if this gets system to boot and come alive,,,if you do a system restore you may loose all of your saved data !!! Good Luck , Glenn :)

Best wishes regul joe tokyo. If you get it to start up, check your BIOS to make sure that is set to display an added monitor. Some settings apply to laptop screen only and some allow simultaneous display of laptop screen and external monitor. Doesn't sound too good after your last post. It should make noises and have flashing lights. Hope it goes for you. Bazza (laptop owner, as well)

hey this post came late, and im not sure if anyone will be checking it but if ya do then heres something weird for you to work out!

ok, so the laptop was completely dead and i ended up hooking it up to a PC moniter, just to see if it was, infact the screen that was dead

(to help clarify: i am a complete noob with both laptops and computer hardware)

so with the laptop hooked up and turned on, there was still no picture on the PC moniter- so for no apparent reason i kept turning the laptop on and off, and each say, 3-4 times of doing that it came back to life
eg, the first time the fan started to work, then shortly after the screen light came back on, then all the other proceeding lights and dood-ads came back on!

i had a look at the software and everything seemed to be in order, looks like the dam motherboard needed a vacation but can anyone please explain this? and if it will do it again maybe?

Glad to hear that the laptop is up and running !!! Can't answer if it will happen again, but some advise,,,while its operational...back up any important data that you need off of that hard drive !!!!

And as a cause,,,may simply be a bad POWER SWITCH.......Hope this is helpfull,,,,, Glenn :)

Tend to agree with glenn. May be the on/off switch or loose cabling/connections. You are probably going to have to pull your laptop apart to check out the problem if it persists. Just one of the joys of owning a laptop. Nowhere near as convenient as doing it on a desktop, unfortunately. Glad you got it going, but BACK IT UP now. Bazza
