Dead Notebook

I'm working on a Compaq Presario V2000 that is dead. It has a functionong battery and an ac adapter but neither of them can bring this computer to life. I chatted with Compaq and they said it sounds like a hardware issue but when I tried to get it narrowed down they told me I should send it in. When I plug it in there are no lights whatsoever. I thought it could be the ac adapter but it doesn't make a sound with battery power either. It working fine on both the battery and the ac a few days ago but when I tried to start it yesterday...nothing.

My question is what do I need in the way of hardware to fix this computer. If a good battery won't work and the ac doesn't even show a light???? :confused

 

First you need to confirm that your AC adapter is actually working. If it is broken then you battery could be flat and you would get an unresponsive pc.

If you can't find a voltmeter, try a bulb or LED with a series resistor.

 

As studiot suggests, test the AC adapter first. Use a multimeter. They're cheap; about $20 at Radio Shack. Be sure the voltage output matches what it lists on the adapter itself... Compaqs are usually 19v or 19.5v at 3.0a or so (maybe 3.3 or 3.16)... have you tried removing the battery, and powering up with AC adapter only?

 

Yes, I've removed the battery and the CD/DVD and tried to power it up with the ac but not even a sound.
