Hey all, I recently had my computer die on me. Anyone know how I can recover it? I lost the power supply but replaced it and now it won't start up. I have 2 drives , can I swap master/slave and try to load OS on the old slave?

do you get a post beep after you turn on your computer?
if not then i would say you fried something on your motherboard.

I dont get a POST beep... and my PC is perfectly fine.. NOT ALL motherboards are going to beep for you... Unless they hate you (which seems to be the only time my mobo starts beeping at me) and its a bunch of long beeps witch means your PC is mad at you for cheating on her with the PC at your work :p

yes, it does beep, does that mean the BIOS is ok?

Remove everything not vital and just have the bare necessaties.

Double-check all your wiring, then go into the Bios and make sure everything is detected and displayed correctly.

If you get one beep then there's nothing wrong with your mobo, just make sure you didn't forget to plugin anything or have something plugged in backwards.

umm...don't put your hard drive in the refrigerator...

A little more info about your PC would be helpful, what CPU, OS, amount of RAM, video card, etc, maybe a brief history.

What exactly do you mean by "recover"? Do you want the computer fixed or recover the data that was on the hard drive? Do you need help installing your new power supply?

"can I swap master/slave and try to load OS on the old slave?"

If you want to recover the data, just put the old drive as slave and install windows to the (blank) master disk

ok, heres the stuff, AMD Athlon 750 , original OS was W95 then to 98 then to 2k Pro(mistake) now to XP home, but still NTFS files. 384 RAM, Hurcules video card (forget speed) , a MSI mobo (circa 2000) . This is a homemade computer, I ultamately would like to restore some data i have on there and just let kids use it for games and such.....

How far do you get in the boot process?

When you say "dead computer" I think you can't even get it to power up, but from what you say it sounds like you can.

I get to the OS trying to boot, but hangs up and I get a number of errors I tried putting in OS disc, but that was no help........

Are these errors in a blue screen and you have to reset the computer with its power switch? It might help if you post the number it says there.

If you are sure that your wires are ok and you have another computer, you could hook up your harddrive to that another computer. Then use this working computer to move what you want from master to slave and format the master. Then hook up your HD (one with blank master and slave with important files) back to the original computer and install Windows again.
