Death of a Hard drive

Here is the situation last week my quantum fireball 40 GB hard drive expired while trying to transfer the info to a new hard drive.

It looks like an electrical issue as there is a burn on the circuit board and the bios does not recognize the drive.

1. Does anyone know where I could find a circuit board for a 40GB quantum fireball lct20 (replace w/ Compaq spare 173342-001)? I read that you can exchange them if you find an exact match so I would like to try it.

So I took my new Seagate 200gb drive and installed it in my new computer then 4 days after that click click black screen. When I try to reboot it gets to the searching IDE and hangs.

So now I have two hard drives that died in about a week is my luck really that bad.

2. Could there be other things that could be causing this?
Electrical issues? I have a surge protector but not a UPS.

Anything else that you can think would be greatly appreciated.

Have you tried either of those hardrives in a working pc? You need to rule out what is or isn't working. Sounds like you may have lost a motherboard and/or a hard drive.

 

Your motherboard may still be good, go into your BIOS and check the startup settings and make sure there is nothing in the CD/DVD drives or the floppy drive.
