Ok I'm trying to install debian an emachine

    CPU TYPE Celeron(TM)
    CPU SPEED 900MHz

    SYSTEM MEMORY - 640 KB
    EXTENDED MEMORY - 192MB
    CACHE RAM - 128 KB

and i put the debian i386 network install disk in and loads the main and I push enter and 2 seconds later it stops:

    LAST TWO LINES:

    EIP: [<c013418d>] generic_file_buffered_write+0x23d/0x5a6 SS:ESP 0068:c11bb7bc
<0>Kernel panic - not syncing: attempted to kill init!

    whats going on?

This is purely anecdotal, but I was unable to install Ubuntu, which I think is a Debian-flavored distro, on an aging eMachine (I'll have to look up my specs, but it's a T3958 or something). My apparent problem, unlike yours, was an "out of range" message from my computer screen--outmoded graphics apparently.

I downloaded Mandriva One and it ran just fine from a Live CD. I eventually partitioned my machine and am dual booting.

Can you run the OS from a Live CD without installing it on your machine? Are you trying to install it all the way without running it off the CD first?

ETA: also, are there sometimes issues about using a network install on an individual machine?

I do not remember the exact cause, but sometimes I get "kill init" error when I unhook a USB stick without remembering to unmount it. I solve it by turning off the box and leaving it cold for up to 5 mins. reboot solves it, as there is nothing in RAM.

I was using the network install disk, doesn't allow me to run debian without installing it onto my machine. And the network install for debian just installs the bare minimum then downloads the rest from the internet and from my experience on other rigs I haven't run into problems like I have now.

I have tried multiple times on installing it but it stops after about one page of code.

A kernel panic is caused when the bootloader instructions do not sync with the hardware. If its an installed system, its usually an error in grub's menu.lst or lilo's lilo.conf. If its not an installed system, its usually the media... the CD or the HD.

Since you've successfully booted the computer with other Linux CD's, it may just be a corrupted CD and/or software. First suggestion is to download a new copy of Debian and burn it to a fresh CD at a very slow speed (5x or less). After making sure the MD5 sums match, try the installation again.
