I installed Debian on an older computer, and X doesn't work at all. I used xf86config, and even set the machine as standard VGA (or at least tried to. Doesn't work. The message I get is:
/user/X11R6/lib/X11/xinit/xserverrc: /user/bin/X11/X no such file or directory.

The Video card is a Rage 128 All-In- Wonder

I am at a loss as to what to do next.

Any help would be greatly apreciated.

Are you getting /user or /usr? Do whereis X or locate X|grep bin|less and tell us the results.

retiglum-no guarantees, but I THINK this is how I got my X to work, if I remember correctly:

    As root, enter:
    dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86

Then, you go through all the configurations.

When I chose VESA instead of VGA, and a resolution of 1024 x 768 (and chose to enable the frame buffer) then it worked for me.
Oh, I choose 70 Hz as the freq. Careful here, of course. Don't push your monitor past its capabilities. It may damage it, they say.

I post this, because your video card should have a lot more "muscle' than mine (which has only 32MB).

Depending on your monitor, I think this may be worth a try. Good luck!!!

Thanks for your help, but I'm not there yet:

    locate X|grep bin|less

gives me a large list of files, most in /usr/X11R6/bin. I am afraid I mistyped 'usr' as 'user' in my origional post. I do not seem to even have a 'usr/X11R6/lib/X11/' directory.

    dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86

gives me '/user/sbin/dpkg-reconfigure: xserver-xfree86 is not fully installed'

I used 'apt-get xserver-xfree86' and managed to get x started, and kde starts, then I get an error:

"Could not init font path element unix/:7100, removing from list

    Fatal server error:
    Caught signal 4. Server aborting"

Thanks for the help you've already provided.

hey retiglum, I'm way outta my league talking about this stuff, grasping at straws, so if you want me to butt out of this thread, I will.

However, I've been trying to remember (I tried so many things to get X to finally work).

I believe I had a similiar experience: the splash screen would come up, I would see things at the bottom of the kde "sign" initializing. When it got to the keyboard/mouse..... kablooyeee, nothing.

It seems as though at one point I tried a soft link between the /dev/psaux and /dev/input/mice (or something). Anyway, I did a google search and I think these links may be of help:

(also see the follow ups to that one).
