Looking to purchase a good notebook within the next week in the $800 to $1000 range plus maintantence coverage. Seen some new decent notebooks this week with 15.4" display, 2G ram, 120-160G HD and AMD processor with Vista premium from local stores like Best Buy. Will be used for desktop replacement and won't be moved around much. Sony is out of my price range, but would like to know if HP or Toshiba would be better to go with or who to avoid or consider. Thanks

This is exactly my situation now too. I would appreciate any input as to which computer would be the best to buy as a desktop replacement. I don't care much about portability but I do want durability. 2 gb ram would be nice but I might have to settle for 1gb if it is too pricey.
I am looking for a 17" screen, however, and I am leaning towards the Core 2 Duo processor unless someone knows something that would be better.
Hopefully, I will get some suggestions that will help me with my decision.
    Thanks in advance

I would suggest an Asus notebook, pretty cheap, great hardware at good prices. I bought mine from newegg, it's a f3 series that I bought for a little over $1200, should be cheaper now. It has a 15 inch wide screen, 1 gb ram (upgrade to two gigs) two slots, Core 2 duo 7200 2gig, vista premium, ati x1700 256 mb up to 512 hyper mem.

There's alot to choose from, but ive found the Asus brand to be cheaper then all the other brands for this setup.
