I am at the point of building my computer where I need to make a call on the optical drive. I've always had wonderful experiences with Plextors in the past, so I've narrowed my choice down to their two latest drives, and would like any input on what you've heard or experienced that can help me decide.

    1) The Plextor PX-712A....well regarded in reviews, 12X, single layer, proven performer....lots of "2004 Best in Class" awards from magazines.

    OR...........

    2) The new Plextor PX-716A....pretty new, just really starting to come into the market, 16X, double layer....specs look terrific, but it's new and I've seen some mixed comments on the early drives and they've already released a couple of firmware upgrades in the last few months....hmmmm.

Do I go with the "world class proven performer" (712A) or with the new one (716A) that looks great, but...... Prices, after rebates, are within about $25 of each other, so cost is not a real issue in the decision.

I know...."leading edge....bleeding edge" is good to remember. I'd hate to get stuck with a wonderful unit that still has "teething issues" and I should have waited for the bugs to be worked out. With the media available, is there any real advantage to the 16X DL over the 12X single layer? Sounds like the blank disks for DL are like $10 a pop! Woof! Too rich for my blood!

Thoughts on the smart way to go? What have you heard or experienced with either or both of these units?

    Thank you! Happy Holidays!
