Ok, i have Windows Xp Pro, and ive recentlly done some replacing of icons.

But, somewhere along the line i think i managed to set the default action for opening files to "Search" which means if i double click somthing, i get the find file window up.

Where can i change this back to what it should be?

You found the bug that MS won't admit ;) The file folders file type by default is missing the 'open' command, but yet it works out of the box. So if you even so much as play with it a little, it defaults to 'find'.

My Computer > Tools > Folder Options > File Types tab > File Folder > Advanced > New

    For Action: Open
    For Application: explorer.exe

Make sure you highlight the new 'open' command and click "Set Default"

Click 'OK' all the way out.

If anyone wants to reproduce what I am talking about and see for yourself:

My Computer > Tools > Folder Options > File Types tab > File Folder > Advanced

    Click OK.

Now when you go to a file folder, it brings up a search box instead.

Simply navigating the filetype breaks it.

Thats pretty darn dumb! But now whenever i go to open a folder it takes ages to load it up :/ there any way to make it load the new folder in a current window?

I think you mean to do the following

    start
    control panel
    folder options
    general tab
click on open eachfolder on same window

    Negative.

The issue he is having is a side effect of my workaround. That setting won't affect it.

    I tried :p

EDIT: i tried the reghack, it works.

Ah shucks, I just got lucky.

Only reason I knew about this is because we did it to people's work machines as a prank to watch them scratch their head for the next week ;)

It usually didnt get fixed :p

It's funny I've never seen this one come up here before. Mebbe I just missed it. It's so common on other forums that many forum mods have practically memorized:

    **********
    1. Start Registry Editor (Regedt32.exe).

    2. Locate and then click the Default value under the following keys in the registry if this problem occurs with folders:

    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shell

If this problem occurs with drives:

    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Drive\shell

    3. Click Modify on the Edit menu.

    4. Type none in the Value data box, and then click OK.

    5. Quit Registry Editor.
    ***************

Exactly as Adrynalyne said, it's a bug MS won't admit. It's so easy to make it happen, and finding the cure in the KB isn't a cinch.

Well, the solution is here now, so we've just made MG that little bit better :)

Yeah I didnt even know there was a KB article for it before today.

Last time I dealt with this was back in 2001, before the article even existed.

Good info to have floating around here.

I STILL think we should have a forum to have these gems of knowledge archived and on display. :)
