    Hello
I have Win 10 x 64 and am working on my default apps which is coming along well.
I have a question about my ph0to app.
Essentials which used to have email client, great photo app is accessible but needs Windows help and is fading away.
I find that MS Office 2010 picture manager is a good substitute and would like to make it my default app.
When I open default apps it is not there. Is there a work around?

    Thank you
    Peter

Open MS Office Picture Manager and click Tools > File types. Tick those you want.

Although that did not work for me, I did read you can go to "associate file type>JPEG or JPG(I am not sure which as both were listed) then select change and check the program. It is also referred to as OIS .Of course I would be concerned if a photo was not JPG tht it would not fully function as the regular defaults..
Because these directions seem complicated and uncertain I have selected paint and hope that does the job.
I did not want to create a problem.
When I click on tools I get 'options'which were confusing.
I will continue to read about this and the investigating i have done, indicates a lot of people are trying to make MS Office manager their default.

Not even when you tick 'Always use this app to open JPG files'?

It's ok Bernie. The issue is too small and I will work it out. Have Great New year.

    Hi Peter

Just in case the Win10 setting is not seeing all (should do) try going to the older setup for default apps Control Panel\Programs\Default Programs\Set Default Programs and see if your Essentials is in the list.

I am glad you wrote back b/c I was using the system you referenced as the old one. I then thought to used the new app default and although MS Picture manager was not there per se, 'MS Home and Studend 2010' was there .
I made it my default app so maybe the photo manger will open with all the 6 apps under MS Home and Student so I can select it. It is getting sort of tricky.
    TY
    Peter

You need to navigate to OIS.exe. That's the filename for Microsoft Office Picture Manager.

I am not this techy. Where am I doing this? I looked under file assoc and defaults and cannot find OIS. Why is it so hard?

Click on Browse... and navigate to C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office14 and you'll see OIS.
Ensure the box Always use the selected program to open this kind of file is checked.

I got timed out. I was just trying to thank you and say I found it with file manager but it was 2014 and I have 2010 if that matters.
Also, there was no place on the page or with a rt or left click to make it default. Is this something the average ser shoud have to be into to get a default program?
    I do appreciate your help.

    Hi Peter

If you cannot find it in the list then right click any jpeg file and choose Open With > Microsoft Office 2010 should be in the list (however what Office version are you using currently as MO Picture Manager is not in 2013 or 2016 Office, only <2010) but you can install it with a custom install of older version office if you have one and at the install point click CUSTOM and check NOT AVAILABLE for everything apart from Office Picture Manager in tools and you will just get that app. If you dont have Office 2010 or less then you can install it free by installing the older Sharepoint Designer app, that's free and has Office Picture Manager included from HERE *no licence needed*

Once installed you should have Microsoft Office 2010 in the list of Open With apps for pictures and location to find OIS.exe is C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office14

Also you can but have to do it for all file types that are images you want Office Picture Manager to open via Control Panel\Programs\Default Programs\Set Associations and then choose a File Type and click Change Program.

Note: I have linked to the 64bit version of Sharepoint Designer.

EDIT: I was slow typing and had to install Office Picture Manager as I use Office 2016

    Hi Eldon
I really feel badly as I did something differently. You did so much work and I just got to it - I read all of it and do understand. I feel, for the average user this file conversion etc is a stretch so I installed Windows Essentials with the Photo Gallery I like and the WLM I also like as an email client.
This simplification works for me and I can't thank you enough for the work you did.
    Have a great NY.

    You're welcome peterr.
I use Microsoft Office Picture Manager only for cropping.
