Hello everyone. I am new to the board and am a novice when it comes to PC's. I was wondering if someone might be able to help me out.

I subscribed to AOL (dial-up) but have recently subscribed to a cable ISP (Road Runner). I am keeping my AOL dialup service active (because of the e-mail account) until I have given my friends and other vendors time enough to switch over fully to my new cable ISP e-mail address.

Unfortunately, some of my programs on my computer that require internet updates keep using the AOL dial-up as the default when they try to connect to the web. This is especially problematic since I do not have a phone line to my PC anymore.

Can anyone tell me how to change this default configuration so that these programs attempt to access their updates via my cable modem instead?

    Thanks.

    Welcome to Major Geeks :)

what operating system are you running?

the procedure is slightly different from Operating system to Operating system, but i'd imagine you need to change the network preferences to stop dialing up..

an easy way to do this (Windows XP) is to run the home networking wizard.

    Start> Control Panel> Network Connections

on the left hand side of the window, there should be a little house icon that reads "set up a home or small office network"

simply run that and tell it you have a direct connection to the internet rather than dial-up. (you will probably want to disable Windows Internet Connection FIrewall if you do this, either through the network wizard, or afterwords in the properties of your network adapter card, if you need help, ask) and install a firewall (like zone alarm for example)

also, do you need to have the dial up to check your email for some reason? if not, or if you dont use it frequently, Disable your modem from the Network connections page.

also, in Internet Explorers "Internet Options" on the Connections tab, be sure that LAN settings are set to "automatically detect my settings", and maybe try removing any dial up settings that you see there.

    I hope this helps some
