So my internet randomly wont let me load any pages and signs out of msn for no reason.

When doing msn troubleshoot it says that I have a problem with my default gateway? I have no idea what that is or what's causing any of this. I have to reboot to connect again.

I also tried cliking 'repair' on my network connection, but it just 'disconnects from the network' and does nothing else, I can't even close it.

I have a pc, with a USB wireless adaptor. Windows Xp

    Thank you

    can you ping?

Under a command prompt, type ipconfig /all
    What do you get.
    Try the following commands in a command window;
    ipconfig /flushdns
    ipconfig /release
    ipconfig /renew

    Then netsh winsock reset catalog

    Reboot?:wave

Make and model would help. Are you using Windows or the software that came with the dongle to connect?

Do you have a home network? (router) If so, make and model. Is yours the only wireless on the network? If not, does the connection drop on the other wireless computers at the same time?

I think its the Philips SNU5600 Wireless USB Adapter. I use the windows software, as the philips one wont allow me to connect at all (I knew that was sort of a problem to begin with, but I didn't know how to fix it and so just go around it)

Theres two others in my house who use the network and they haven't mentioned it not connecting, but I don't know if that is the case.

As for the router I'm sorry I can't say what it is other than D-link. Its too high for me to see it properly and my landlord doesn't know what he installed.

Have you completely uninstalled the Phillips software?
I'd download and install Revo Uninstaller
    http://majorgeeks.com/Revo_Uninstaller_d5706.html
Keep the setting at the default, which says moderate. This program will use the software's own uninstaller to remove everything first, then it goes on to pick through the registry and show you all the entries it finds there.
Be careful when looking over the registry entries. You only want to check/tick items that are in bold. If you check/tick anything that is not in bold type, you can render your computer unbootable.

If at any time during the uninstall the computer tells you to reboot, Cancel the reboot and wait until Revo is completely finished before rebooting.

Once we know the software has been completely removed then we can rule out the Phillips software and the windows software as fighting for control and start troubleshooting your connection problem.

I thought of two more things.
    1. When you go to the msn page, do you collect email? If so, check your email program and be sure it is not set to disconnect after downloading your email.
    2. Go into device manager and click on the + in front of Universal Serial Bus Controllers. Then right click the USB Root Hub and select Properties. Click on the Power Management tab and be sure neither item is checked/ticked.
If your USB ports turn off, your wifi dongle loses power and doesn't work.

Incidentally, the Default Gateway refers to the DLink router. There isn't a problem with the router, unless the other people have a problem with the router. The problem is that your dongle and the router stop talking to each other. If the dongle can't get information from the router, then no web pages will load. So we are trying to figure out why your dongle stops working.

I don't collect emails from msn, I just use the chat program.

Also I uninstalled the software for the usb adaptor, which rendered the thing completely useless, and I couldn't reinstall because I don't have the disk with me.

A friend of mine gave me another usb adaptor. its Belkin.

The same thing just happened, where it disconnects, does this mean the problem does reside in the router if two dongles can't connect to the internet?

Your landlord might have configured the router software for MAC filtering. That means, if the dongle you use is not in the list of computers that can connect, you will have no internet access.
