    Hi:

I have checked out the forum for defrag errors and can't find this one addressed. I cannot run defrag. Every time I try to, I get the following error:

MMC cannot open the file C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DFRG.MSC

I cannot get it to start from "Run" either.

I have checked the file assoc. for .msc and it is pointing to mmc.exe

This is my 13yr old pc. She was downloading things while NIS was disabled and got all kinds of crap. I went thru all of the spyware/Adware instructions in that forum, downloaded and ran everything in the order advised. Still, she was being BOMBARDED by porn and pop-ups. I went thru the registry and deleted things I knew were garbage, checking on google to be sure first. Got rid of CoolWWWSearch, WildTangent, AvenueA, FunWebProducts, HotSearchBar, MiniBug, MyWebSearch, SupSav.Smss32, and Targetsaver... thanks to Spybot. I cleaned everything, dumped the recycle bin when needed, re-scanned, rebooted and so far, no sign of porn or pop-ups. I will be putting NIS back on Teen settings after I am sure it's clean, but need to defrag this thing and can't!

    1) Can anyone help me to fix the defrag issue? I checked in regedit to be sure the key was correct, as I'd seen posted in another thread, but it still doesn't work. This started happening before I ever started cleaning.

    2) How can I be sure that I got all of the garbage off? I don't want to turn this over to her till I am sure.

I am a novice at this, so I need simple instructions. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

    Thanks,
    Linda

    Assuming you are using XP.

Go to your Windows\Inf folder and find the file dfrg.inf

    Right-click it and Install.

If that fails, go to Start, Run and type in sfc /scannow (note there is a space after sfc )

You will need your Windows CD.

Regardless of what you do or if it's successful, I would go to the Spyware Forum and follow their recommendations in the "stickies" to rule out infection.

Wow a 13 year old PC! If the windows defrag doesn't work, you can run the command prompt defrag. c:\windows(winnt)\system32\defrag.exe

Or you can always download and try a freetrial third party defrag program. Before you do a defrag, you might want to do a disk cleanup and also delete the temp files.

I think you misread this part.

Now, I own a few 25 year old personal computers.....

    Ooops! thanks for clarifying that.

25 year old, those must be the original 8086 computers. Most people here has not even seen those computers.

    8088 and 8086...yes

But, I will bet 640k memory that a few ppl here have used these old computers and others. C64, APPLE IIE, Timex Sinclair (the kit where you had to solder all the circuits to build the computer....1978 $200....brings back memories)

Site note: my Dad actually soldered this computer together, I was 5 or so.....I still remember it.....
